Who is Sue Baker?
Sue Baker passed away on Monday, November 14, at the age of 67. She has worked in the field for more than 30 years and has been recognised as a pioneer for women in motoring media.
Eight years before Jeremy Clarkson debuted on the the BBC’s flagship automotive programme, Top Gear BBC , in 1980, she was one of the show’s initial presenters.
Baker hosted more than 100 episodes before leaving the show in 1991 to focus on his growing career in automotive journalism.
For 13 years, Baker served as the Observer’s motoring editor. During that time, she also founded the Motor Racing News Service in Kent and freelanced for Saga.
She served as vice president of The Guild of Motoring Writers and is credited with being among the first women to advance to such a position in the field of automotive journalism.
Who all paid tribute to the journalist?
A statement issued by her family on Monday said, “It is with great sadness that we share the news of Sue’s passing. A doting mother to Ian and Hannah, a loving grandmother to Tom and George, and a wonderful mother-in-law to Lucy. She passed at home this morning with family around her.”
Motoring editor and columnist Geraldine Herbert posted on her Twitter saying, “She was a wonderful person, a brilliant journalist, and a dear friend… she blazed a trail for women in a man’s world.”
The Guild of Motoring Writers of which Baker was the vice-president and a former chair also paid tribute to her.

What illness was she suffering from?
She suffered from a degenerative disorder called motor neurone disease damages the nerves in the brain and spinal cord.
Along with impairing mobility and movement, it can also result in a number of other symptoms include body weakness, weight loss, and slurred speech. There is no known treatment, and the illness typically shortens lifespans.
Sue baker is survived by two children, Hannah and Ian, two grandchildren, George and Tom, and a daughter-in-law, Lucy.
