How did Toby return to singing?
The country music icon had been resting since disclosing his stomach cancer diagnosis in June.
He had shared the news of his diagnosis in June via Instagram to the fans captioning the post, “Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer, I’ve spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery. So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover, and relax, I am looking forward to spending this time with my family. But I will see the fans sooner than later I can’t wait”.
Despite initially leaving the remaining tour dates, up on his website, the diagnosis ultimately caused him to cancel the remaining gigs in 2022.
For the first time since his cancellations, he performed on a large stage at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse in Lexington, Kentucky.
Among other songs, the performer sang Otis Redding’s “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay,” Lynyrd Skynard’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” and his own hit, “I Love This Bar.” He had come to the city to watch the Breeders’ Cup race at Keeneland.
Jeff Ruby, the owner of the steakhouse, posted photos on Twitter with Toby. Jeff wrote under one of the tweets, “If I lose a fortune at @keeneland today I will still have had a great day. Seeing @tobykeith alive, well, being Toby and looking great ( and trim too) was an incredible thing to see. See ya tonight pal. Millions of your fans are happy as well.”
What happened at the BMI awards?
At its 2022 Country Awards on Tuesday night in Nashville, BMI honoured the minds behind some of the country genre’s most popular songs.
Toby Keith, however, received the 2022 BMI Icon Award, one of the night’s most significant honours. It’s a privilege to share the stage with legendary performers like Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and more.
BMI distributed a number of songwriting honours throughout the evening, leading up to the Icon award. All through the performance, songs from Toby Keith’s extensive song list were mentioned or featured in montages.
Many artists paid tribute to the country legend including Carrie Underwood who sang his song, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy”.
In addition to everything he has brought to country music, his charitable work with the OK Kids Korral in Oklahoma City has also received praise.
