Shou Zi Chew was born on January 1, 1983 in Singapore. He came from a poor family, his father working as a construction worker and his mother as a bookkeeper.
He graduated from Hwa Chong Institution, and went on to serve in National Service in which he was a commissioned officer in the Singapore Army. Post his military service, Chew attended University College London, where he graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Economics degree.

Following his graduation from University College London in 2006, Chew worked as a banker for two years at Goldman Sachs in London before joining the venture capital firm DST Global. Chew oversaw a group of early investors in ByteDance at DST Global in 2013.
Chew joined Xiaomi as the company’s chief finance officer in 2015. He was named the head of Xiaomi’s global business in 2019.
Chew became the chief financial officer of ByteDance in March 2021. After Kevin A. Mayer, the CEO of TikTok, resigned from the ByteDance subsidiary after only three months on the job, he was replaced.
Chew provided testimony before the U.S. Congress in March 2023 regarding the push to pass legislation that would outlaw TikTok in the country.
