Depp, 53, was honored on Thursday night with the inaugural Rhonda’s Kiss Healing and Hope Award for his support of cancer victims. The actor showed empathy for the parents he encountered while visiting sick children in hospitals during his acceptance speech.

“To the parents I mentioned before in the room, who I have witnessed melting and their own sort of courage,” he remarked. “I was one of those parents for weeks when my kid was unwell.”

In 2007, Lily-Rose Depp, then 17 years old, was admitted to the hospital after acquiring an E. coli infection that resulted in kidney failure. At the moment, she was seven years old.

Depp and his then-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis, Lily-mother, Rose’s, kept a continual vigil at Lily-nine-day Rose’s bedside during her hospitalization.
