People have been reexamining the murders committed by the prolific serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and references to him in popular culture ever since the release of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story on Netflix.
Evan Peters, who starred in Mare of Easttown, plays the “Milwaukee Cannibal” or “Milwaukee Monster,” the monster who murdered and dismembered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.
People are now reevaluating the Katy Perry song “Dark Horse” on social media, with some charging that the lyrics are disrespectful for “romanticizing” Dahmer.
Juicy J appeared in the single, which was released in 2013. She’s a beast/ I name her Karma/ She eats your heart like Jeffrey Dahmer, according to one of the rapper’s verses.
Despite the fact that the song is almost a decade old, social media users have started critiquing it as a result of the Netflix series’ widespread discussion of Dahmer’s atrocities.
‘Dark Horse’ has drawn criticism online since the series’ 22 September release on Netflix.
“She eats your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer” is a phrase from the song Dark Horse that still makes me angry, so I always have to tell my daughter to change the channel. It’s incredibly insensitive to the relatives of the victims. While watching Netflix, I hope others would think of them. Sorry for their suffering,” one person wrote.
Another user wrote: “Juicy J is sick for forcing people, especially young children, to chant that man’s name and Katy Perry is equally sick for permitting that phrase in her song. I didn’t know who Jeffrey Dahmer was until last week.
One more person commented, “I think it disrespectful asf to the families that Katy Perry and Juicy J basically sang a song saying she eats your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer’ which I find asf.
Other musicians have also come under fire on social media for including references to Dahmer in their songs. Examples include Kesha, Eminem, and Marilyn Manson, who have all used him in past songs.
