Bizarrely, Kanye West compared his wearing of a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt to Tonya Harding’s famous triple axel.
Kanye West compared his choice to wear a “White Lives Matter” shirt to Paris Fashion Week to the moment when notorious figure skater Tonya Harding landed a complex jump.
Since he was criticized for promoting a “White Lives Matter” shirt at a Yeezy brand fashion show, the rapper made an appearance on Fox News’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Thursday to defend himself.
During the first half of their two-part interview, Carlson asked West why he decided to pull off the stunt, and West compared himself to one of the most divisive figures in American skating history.
It’s like asking Tonya Harding how she did a triple flip or spin; after so much practice, they came naturally when it was time to compete. “It takes a combination of a divine link, a sixth sense, and sheer brilliance.”
He then said, “That’s what’s happening.” God is getting us ready for the tough fights ahead.
Insider’s request for comment on Harding was made after business hours, but the company’s representatives did not immediately respond.
It was at the 1991 US Figure Skating Championships in Minnesota where Harding made history by completing the first competitive triple axel by an American woman. Harding told ABC News that, after the release of the 2017 biopic “I, Tonya,” starring Margot Robbie as the US skater, she had “just done” the stunt, which entails a forward takeoff followed by three and a half revolutions in the air.
“Yes, I went ahead and did it. This was a solo effort, “The words came from her mouth. When I was trying to land the triple axel, nobody stepped in to help me.
Harding’s skating skills earned her a place in history books, but she is best known for being accused of plotting an attack on Nancy Kerrigan, her main competitor at the 1994 Winter Olympics.
Harding has consistently refuted allegations that he had any hand in planning or carrying out the assault.
Many people, including those who advocate for Black rights, were outraged by West’s t-shirt stunt.
The mother of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man killed in 2020 while jogging in a Georgia neighborhood by white men, criticized the rapper on Monday for wearing the shirt.
A lawyer for Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, told Rolling Stone that Ye’s shirt could “directly support and legitimize extremist behavior, [much] like the behavior that took the life of her son.”
