The game is not only popular for its brilliant storyline, but also its feature of one character control only. And the new character is Arthur Morgan.

Morgan is the protagonist of the storyline who explores various adventures on his quest for life. He is a high-ranking member of the Van der Linge gang. He’s ought to deal with the decline of the Wild West while attempting to survive against government forces and other adversaries in a fictionalized representation of the American Frontier.

Clark initially found it challenging as the dynamics of the game could result in two very different conclusions, depending upon the player. While the goal was to depict Arthur as a character complex enough to be helpful for players to make choices as they wish.

The writer, Dan Houser, wanted to create Morgan as someone who is weak at the start but eventually becomes stronger as the game progresses. But, Arthur ended up being strong and tough since the beginning, and is “taken on a more intellectual roller coaster when his worldview gets taken apart”.

Inspiration

After being selected for the role, Clark referred to plenty of characters and references to perfect his task. His research found him his main inspiration, Toshiro Mifune, whose characters’ stoic but humorous nature held the details that Morgan must have.

He also gained perception from The Proposition (2005), which has a similar character arc as Morgan. Roger also watched films like High Noon (1952), and also works of John Wayne. He also felt that Arthur was more talkative than Clint Eastwood’s depiction of the Man with No Name.

Clark also listened to Don Edward’s 1993 version of the song “Coyotes” constantly throughout the production process.
