Hugh Dillon, who is also a co-creator of the show and the main singer of the rock band Headstones, spoke to Screenrant about how much of the show’s inspiration comes from actual events.
Is Mayor of Kingstown A True Story?
Even though Mayor of Kingstown isn’t based on a real event, co-creator Dillon’s memories of growing up in Kingston, Ontario, served as an inspiration. The city is situated halfway between Montreal, Quebec, and Toronto, Ontario. Kingston Penitentiary, Canada’s first federal prison, is located there. The prison was the ideal location to film the Mayor of Kingstown because, unlike the play, it was closed in 2013. The majority of the Canadian country’s jails are located in Kingston. Similar to the Paramount+ crime drama, the Kingston area’s nine jails have a major economic impact on the region.
I’m from a town where there were nine prisons, he declared. Kingston, Ontario—midway between Toronto and Montreal—is where Dillon comes from. Kingston does certainly have a number of institutions, notably Kingston Penitentiary, the first significant federal penitentiary in Canada, in addition to the obvious nominal similarity.
“You know, as a kid, my mom was a teacher, my friend’s parents were prison guards, one was a warden, other friends were convicts, and it was, you know, in this perfectly cultivated civilized world there’s this brutality and these institutions.”
Dillon described seeing the guard towers as a kid, thinking they looked like Disneyland; however, it was very different.
“And as I got older, you see these things that happen in our society, child killers to serial killers to murderers to whatever horrific thing we’re seeing in the news, and they’re coming to your town,” he continued. “Wherever in the country, they’ve been captured, they’re coming to your town. So, I don’t know how that bleeds into my psychology or how that works, but that’s what I brought.”
Even though the stories Dillon and Sheridan wrote for Mayor of Kingstown are fictional, they have traces of reality.
