The short answer is that he’s right where he should be: in jail. But there’s more to know.

Who Is Larry Ray?

People says that before Ray’s disturbing crimes came to light, Ray, whose real name is Lawrence Grecco, worked in a number of fields, including nightlife (he ran a nightclub in Scotch Plains, NJ) and consulting. In the 1980s, he even traded stocks on Wall Street. New York Magazine says that Ray also helped raise money for politicians, including Patrick Kennedy. Even though he didn’t have a degree, he did all of this.

What did Larry Ray do wrong?

According to New York Magazine, Ray’s legal problems started in 2000 when he was “indicted as a co-conspirator in a mafia-related pump-and-dump scheme.” Three years later, he admitted that he had stolen money from investors. In the same year, he split up with his wife, Teresa, with whom he had two children.

After being locked up several times, Ray got out of jail in 2010 and moved into his daughter Talia’s dorm room. He ended up mentally controlling students there and using them for free labour and sex trafficking for more than a decade. Later, he got five students to move into a one-bedroom apartment with him on the Upper East Side of New York City. There, he tried to keep them from seeing their families and friends.

In a statement from April 2022 (via People), US Attorney Damian Williams said this about Ray: “Larry Ray moved into his daughter’s dorm room at Sarah Lawrence College twelve years ago. When he got there, he met a group of friends who were just starting out. Over the next ten years, he tried to control and destroy their lives by using violence, threats, and mental abuse. He made use of them. He made them afraid. He hurt them badly. I want to be clear. Larry Ray is a thief. A bad guy who did bad things.”

Where is Larry Ray in the year 2023?

The FBI arrested Ray in February 2020; since then, he has been turned down for bail five times. In April 2022, Ray was found guilty of 15 crimes, including racketeering conspiracy, money laundering, sex trafficking, forced labour, and not paying taxes. Ray was given a 60-year prison sentence in January 2023.

According to the New York Post, Judge Lewis Liman said in court that Mr. Ray’s actions in this case were especially bad and that his crimes were especially bad. At the time, Liman called Ray’s actions, which included both physical and mental abuse, “pure and simple sadism.” He said that Ray robbed his victims not only of their self-worth and college memories, but “ultimately their bodies.”

Ray was sentenced to prison in 2023, where he still is. In addition to the 60 years he was given, he was given a lifetime of supervised release.
