Lil Jon is a $30 million dollar rapper, songwriter, record producer, DJ, and actor from the United States. He rose to prominence as the frontman of Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz. Lil Jon is also credited as one of the founders of the crunk hip hop subgenre.
Jonathan Smith was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 17, 1971.
Smith grew raised in a middle-class area in Southwest Atlanta. He is the oldest of five children born to his father, a Lockheed Martin engineer, and his mother, an Army Reserves member.
Smith was a member of the marching band at Frederick Douglass High School, where he was enrolled in a magnet programme.
Jon was employed by Jermaine Dupri to work at So So Def Recordings. Jon worked with the company from 1993 to 2000. He established Lil Jon and The East Side Boyz in 1996. The band’s first track, “Who U Wit?” is credited with establishing the crunk hip hop subgenre. “Get Crunk, Who U Wit: Da Album,” the band’s debut album, was released in 1997.
“Shawty Freak a Lil Sumthin” was one of the album’s singles, along with “Who U Wit?” “We Still Crunk!” was released by the group in 2000. The single “I Like Dem Girlz” was featured on the album. “Put Yo Hood Up,” “Kings of Crunk,” and “Crunk Juice” was released by Lil Jon and The East Side Boyz in 2001, 2002, and 2004, respectively. In 2010, Lil Jon released his solo album “Crunk Rock.”
“Get Low,” “Freek-a-Leek,” and “Yeah!” are among Lil Jon’s Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 singles. “Yeah!” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance. In 2013, Lil Jon and his pal Pitbull worked with DJ Snake on the multi-platinum single “Turn Down for What.”
Lil Jon continues to write music, some of which are intended for usage in television and/or feature films. Girls Trip (2017), Superfly (2018) with the Future-led soundtrack, The First Purge (2018), and Spies in Disguise are some of his favourite films (2019).
Lil Jon has a wide range of hobbies. He owns a company that makes the “Crunk” energy drink, an Oakley eyewear line, and a winery that makes Merlot, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Lil Jon’s personal life is known for the catchphrase “Yey-ah.”
In 2004, Jon married his wife Nicole. Nathan (born 1998), who goes by the stage moniker DJ Young Slade, is their son. Nathan has been DJing since he was eleven years old. Jon has stated that seeing everything come full circle with his son is one of his biggest thrills in life.
He is a die-hard supporter of all of Atlanta’s sporting teams. He’s also a supporter of the University of Tennessee Volunteers, who has changed his hit song “Turn Down for What” to “Third Down for What” during third downs. He is also a supporter of the Las Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League. Jon is featured in the team’s 2019 documentary, “Valiant.”
Lil Jon is a big advocate for education, particularly for children in developing nations who do not have access to it. He has contributed to the funding of two Ghanaian schools. The first, a Kindergarten, launched in October 2017. The second is a Primary School with a student population of over 300.

Jon, Killer Mike, and T.I., all of whom attended Atlanta’s Frederick Douglass High School, funded the costs for the marching band to travel to New Orleans to march in the Mardi Gras parade in 2018.
Lil Jon was detained in a Vietnamese airport in November 2019 following a performance at Saigon’s Envy Nightclub. Jon and his entourage arrived at the airport on November 16. Jon was held because of the large amount of jewellery he was wearing, which was estimated to be worth $400,000.
Jon should have declared all of his jewellery when he entered and attempted to leave the nation, according to authorities. Jon instantly requested that the US Embassy be contacted, and two officials arrived at the airport to rapidly resolve the matter. Vietnamese authorities wanted to keep his valuables to have it professionally assessed, but Jon and his belongings were eventually released.
In June 2020, Jon went for a joy ride in Alan Ampudia’s vehicle through the streets of Ensenada, the winner of the Baja 1000 off-road race. Helmets were worn by both men.
