A current mystery series based on the exploits of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic character Sherlock Holmes is the Sherlock Holmes film franchise. Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Kelly Reilly, and many other well-known actors are among the performers who appear in the movies.
The Sherlock Holmes franchise has made a name for itself as a distinctive take on the classic literary character, paying particular emphasis to how Holmes approaches problems in his head, thanks to Guy Ritchie’s direction and highly stylized treatment of the material.
There have been two movies in the franchise so far. It was revealed that a third movie was already in production not long after the second one hit theatres.
But that was back in 2011, and after more than ten years, it would seem that the movie is still not any closer to being produced than when it was first announced. Everyone wants to know if Sherlock Holmes 3 will still take place.
Will a Third Sherlock Holmes Film Ever Be Made?
It’s debatable whether fans would still be interested in a third movie after more than ten years have passed since the premiere of Sherlock Holmes 2. The likelihood of Warner Bros pursuing the proposal has diminished, while it is still feasible.
Having said that, Team Downey has now declared their intention to adapt the movie series into a TV show for HBO Max. Team Downey intends to create the universe as Ritchie had done in the movies using their experience working within the MCU.
There are now two TV series in development for HBO Max that are set in the world of the movies, though neither the casting nor the release date has been officially revealed as of yet.

The Possible Release Date for Sherlock Holmes 3
The third movie was originally scheduled for release on December 25, 2020, however, Warner Bros. later pushed that date back one whole year to December 22, 2021.
Since that deadline was missed, Sherlock Holmes 3 is still waiting for a specific release date.
Fletcher described it as “one of those awful twists of fate,” when the pandemic struck and threw people into the air all over the planet. However, I am well aware of the enormous appetite for it, and I’m sure that others are as well.
“However, I think it ought to be made because it’s amazing. I sincerely hope so.
The possibility of TV program spin-offs was also discussed above, although it appears that if that were to happen, it would be after the third film had been released.
It’s difficult to even guess when we can watch the third film, as there is so little information available about it. It seems they were always aiming for a December release, but we doubt it will be December 2022, so maybe December 2023 if work begins this year.

The Cast of Sherlock Holmes 3
Paul Anderson was rumored to be returning as Sebastian Moran as well, although those claims are a few years old at this point. Previously, it was stated that Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and both will reprise their roles as Sherlock and Watson, respectively.
We’re not expecting Noomi Rapace to return as Madame Simza Heron because Holmes just isn’t the sort to settle down, and there has been no news on whether Kelly Reilly, aka Mary Morstan, will return because Watson’s wives do have an unfortunate tendency to die in the books.
We’d want to see Stephen Fry return as Mycroft, Sherlock’s brother, even if it hasn’t been confirmed; we love Stephen Fry, that’s why. Lastly, we do know who will be directing; Dexter Fletcher has been tapped because Guy Ritchie is now preoccupied with directing Disney live-action films.

The Plot of Sherlock Holmes 3
The third Sherlock Holmes film will presumably pick up where the third left off, with Watson believing the great investigator is dead before Watson realizes the reports of his death were untrue and the two return to solving crimes.
The film ended with the predictable revelation that Sherlock Holmes had somehow survived, but Watson was left in the dark. In A Game of Shadows, the titular Sherlock Holmes realized he couldn’t defeat Moriarty (Jared Harris) and chose to flip the board instead, sending both of them off the Reichenback Falls.
The Sherlock Holmes films have so far been unafraid of leaving behind the established canon to tell their own stories, but it’s hard to guess what crime they’ll be solving.
Even that is just a guess, but if we were to guess, we’d say they’ll pick up on the recurring theme of the bad guys trying to spark World War One.
There have been rumors that Paul Anderson, who played Sebastian Moran, Moriarty’s right-hand man, will make a comeback, so perhaps the Baker Street guys will once again be threatened by the “second most dangerous man in London.”
