Garth Brooks was married for 15 years to his first wife before meeting and falling in love with fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood. The marriage between Garth Brooks and his first wife, Sandy Mahl, began in the 1980s and lasted until the turn of the millennium.

There is still debate over the specifics of how Mahl and Brooks first connected in the early 1980s. Showbiz Cheat Sheet claims that the two initially met when Brooks was working as a bouncer at the Tumbleweed Ballroom in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

The rumors about Mahl and a fight in the ladies’ room are true. As a result of her hand being jammed, she was introduced to Brooks. In the country music podcast Country Fancast, Brooks and Mahl are introduced as dance partners who met at the Tumbleweed Ballroom.

Brooks and Mahl were both attending Oklahoma State University-Stillwater, so it’s possible that they bumped into each other in the dorms or on the dance floor. Dating in the early stages of their relationship consisted of strolls around campus since they realized that simple activities brought them the most happiness.

The pair met, fell in love over music, and eventually tied the knot in 1986. (per Wide Open Country). They uprooted to Music City a year later, when Brooks was just getting his music career started, as per Celebrity Net Worth.

Unfortunately for Brooks, stardom is known to strain relationships. Just how did Mahl and Brooks keep their cool when things got rough?

The success of Garth Brooks was almost instantaneous after he began releasing records. In 1989, his debut album, “Hungry Years,” peaked at #2 on the country albums list. The 1990 album “No Fences” spent a record-breaking 23 weeks at the top of the charts.

Brook’s professional life was expanding alongside his expanding family. Taylor, August, and Allie Mahl were the children he and Sandy Mahl had in the ’90s (per Wide Open Country).

Mahl reveals that the time she and Brooks spent apart was the main factor in the decline of their marriage in the documentary “Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On.” She explained that he was always being pulled and prodded by those who “just want your attention” (per Good Housekeeping).

After his absence, she said, “there would be number-one parties, or shows, or CMAs, or ACMs, American Music Awards, so it was continuously happening. But we both grew away really, really quickly.”

There was an even earlier snag in their union. Brooks talked about his first encounter with his future wife, Trisha Yearwood, on “The Ellen Show.” Brooks knew he had feelings for Yearwood, but he felt obligated to his marriage to Mahl. “It’s funny ’cause I felt the feeling like when you just meet your wife but I’d been married for 13 months,” Brooks said.

A divorce was finalized between the two on December 17, 2001. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the $125 million settlement Mahl obtained makes this “one of the most costly divorces of all time.”

A divorced Brooks told the Tennessean that his priorities had changed to include his children. In the 14 years that their daughters were growing up, Mahl and Brooks were both very involved in co-parenting. Both parents were there for their children’s daily morning and nighttime routines. Celebrity Net Worth reports that Brooks resumed touring in 2014 after his two daughters had reached adulthood. The publication claims that Brooks can make up to $90 million yearly from his tours.

At the Wild Heart Ranch, which she co-founded in her home state of Oklahoma, wildlife conservation is a way of life for Mahl. Moreover, she was present to cheer on her youngest daughter, Allie Colleen, at the legendary Grand Ole Opry in Nashville (per Guitar Girl).

Brooks told Us Weekly after the documentary came out that he still has a lot of respect for Mahl because of what he learned from her in the video. ‘She was wonderful,’ the country singer/songwriter exclaimed.

It’s not often you get to hear the other side, and when I saw her recently I think I hugged her harder than I ever have before because I now know things that either I didn’t hear or that she didn’t say until now. “I was gone so much on the road [during our marriage] that there were things I guess she was [trying to tell] me that I didn’t hear until this biography.”

It’s nice to know that even when fame and money are at stake, former partners can still speak so highly of one another.
