After the killing of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, Ward captured the poignant image of Jacqueline Kennedy arriving in Washington with her husband’s blood on her knees.
Days later, his shot of the sad first lady holding her two young children in front of her husband’s casket was featured on the cover of Life Magazine, and Andy Warhol turned the photograph into an iconic print of Jacqueline Kennedy.
Over the span of five decades, Ward traveled to over 130 countries on assignment for TIME, Newsweek, Life, and National Geographic.
He experimented with airplanes and helicopters, as well as diving underwater. He photographed the Beatles’ debut concert in America, as well as other musical stars.
Ward died in his home in Malibu, California. He is survived by his 58-year-old wife Charlotte and their four children.

He spent his final year painting, which his publicist referred to as his “second favorite creative form.”
His son Django Ward and his wife Marie-France Ward survive him. He requested that any memorials be made to the Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center at Boston University.
