Tennis star Serena Williams is expecting a baby. The 41-year-old professional tennis player and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, are expecting their second child. They have a daughter, Olympia, who is five years old; they wed in November 2017.

On Monday, Williams made the announcement on Instagram by posting a slideshow of images of herself and Ohanian. Williams holds her pregnant belly in one photo, while the couple stands next to each other in another, both beaming.

The description of the post read, “Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala,” and it featured a rundown of the attendees’ outfits, hairstyles, and cosmetics for the evening.

Williams announced her pregnancy after writing an essay for Vogue last year in which she discussed her decision to begin an “evolution” away from tennis and her desire to expand her family from three to four members.

In addition, Williams admitted that she “never thought about having kids” before launching her profession.

There have been occasions when I have questioned whether or not I should bring children into this world. She said, “I’ve never felt particularly at ease around infants or young children, and I assumed that if I ever had a child, I’d have help with it around the clock.”

Williams added that while she does have “a lot of support,” she is also an “incredibly hands-on mother” to Olympia.

In the past five years, Olympia has been separated from me for a total of 24 hours. The four-time Olympic gold medalist remarked, “I always looked forward to seeing her face light up when she walked out of the building and saw me waiting there for her.” This past year, as he was healing from a hamstring injury, he picked her up from school four or five days a week. When it comes to Olympia, I am willing to give up anything.

Williams’ first birth was a challenging one. After giving birth via emergency cesarean section, the tennis champion had a coughing fit that caused her wound to reopen, at which point surgeons discovered many potentially fatal blood clots.

Williams told PEOPLE that she was lucky to be alive after the birth of her baby, but that she spent the next six weeks in bed recovering from childbirth and attempting to adjust to parenting.

She admitted, “I’ve been testing the limits of my body physically my whole life.” And this is the one and only occasion when I was powerless to stop it. My body just wouldn’t cooperate. I gave it everything I had and then some. Man, that was a struggle.

In January 2021, Williams revealed to PEOPLE how much her life has been changed by the love of her husband and their daughter.

She remarked, “It gives me a lot of reason beyond what I do, and so, it’s really important.” I’ve always put my profession first, but after settling down with a wife and kids, I discovered there’s more to life than work. Indeed, that’s terrific.

She continued, reflecting on her newfound acceptance of life’s imperfections: “Not everything is going to be perfect, not everything is going to be amazing. Taking the attitude, “Oh, I’m going to be perfect in everything,” will not get you very far. I am destined for unrivaled success. I’m going to try my hardest.

No matter how many times you fall, get back up. It all comes down to how often you get back up. That is the main thing. That’s a great way of thinking, and it’s good to keep it up,” she said. And that’s what I’ve always maintained: a champion isn’t measured by how many times they win, but by how they bounce back from defeat.
