J. Cole surprised his fans in a way they never saw coming.

On 18th Jan, Wednesday night, Producer Bvtman publically displayed the rapper’s new track “Procrastination (Broke),” along with a message from Cole, which reads that from where the song came up into his mind. Cole admitted that the song was not supposed to be released, but he decided to release it as a “thank you” to Bvtman as well as “every producer out there cooking up and sharing their work with the world.”

It’s a million artists out there right now just like me, hungry and searching every day for something to spark a word, a melody, a hook, a verse, a punchline, a way to vent, or a way to cut through,” the text reads. “On a day when I couldn’t find much motivation, I was looking for anything to inspire me. Out of curiosity, I typed in ‘J. Cole type beat’ into YouTube. Yours was the first I saw. I pressed play, focused, and wrote this.”

Interestingly, Bvtman received a text message from Ibrahim “IB” Hamad, who is the co-founder of Dreamville Records and also the longtime manager of Cole. IB told to the producer that Cole has always been a fan of his work. Meanwhile, it was an over-the-moon moment for Bvtman, and immediately after receiving the text, he posted his sense of peace on Instagram, writing:

“If you know me, you know what this post means to me & what this song means to me,” he wrote in an IG caption. “If you know me you know this is my peace finally, my dream. … It’s crazy how this happened. Randomly driving on the high with my shorty and I get a text from [Ibrahim Hamad] saying [Cole] fuccs with my beats. I almost ain’t believe this was real life…. But it is.”

The new song arrives more than a year after J. Cole’s sixth studio album, The Off-Season, was released in 2021 via Dreamville/Roc Nation/Interscope. On the Billboard 200 albums list on May 29, 2021, the album debuted at No. 1. KOD (2018), 4 Your Eyez Only (2016), 2014 Forest Hills Drive (2014), Born Sinner (2013), and Cole World: The Sideline Story (2011) all charted at the top of the Billboard 200.
