The British actress Emilia Clarke is set to play the role of Oscar Wilde’s wife, Constance Lloyd in the upcoming film An Ideal Wife, directed by the Australian film director Sophie Hyde.

As we all know, the movie follows the narrative of Oscar Wilde’s marriage to Lloyd, a writer and activist, and the sexual awakening she underwent after discovering that Wilde was gay.

In 1884, Lloyd wed Wilde, and the two became parents of two sons. But once Wilde was sentenced to two years in prison for homosexuality, which was still a crime at the time, Lloyd relocated to Switzerland with their kids and cut off their relationship with the author. While residing in exile in Genoa, Italy, with her two sons, Lloyd passed away in 1898 at the age of 40.

The project is being handled by Embankment Films, and it is scheduled to have its first screening for potential investors during the AFM this coming week. Since the beginning of the year, the UK production and sales organization has been holding discussions with potential investors over the project, and just recently, Clarke has become affiliated with the endeavor.

Emilia Clarke To Star As Oscar Wilde’s Wife, "Constance Lloyd" in Sophie Hyde’s ‘An Ideal Wife’

Clarke will soon be seen with Michael Shannon in the film “McCarthy,” directed by Václav Marhoul, which is based on the life of the notorious American senator Joseph McCarthy. However, “An Ideal Wife” will be Clarke’s first major screen appearance since Paul Feig’s 2019 holiday romcom Last Christmas.

Well-known stars like Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, and Emma Thompson, who also co-wrote the script, will be co-starred with Clarke in the movie.

The filmography of Embankment Films also includes “Clybourne Park” by Pam MacKinnon, starring Sarah Paulson, Anthony Mackie, and Martin Freeman; “Emily” by Frances O’Connor, starring Emma Mackey as author Emily Bronte; and “The Son” by Florian Zeller, starring Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, and Vanessa Kirby.
