As holiday festivities come to a close, law enforcement agencies across Colorado are intensifying efforts to identify and intercept impaired drivers on the roads.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, December historically marks a grim period for road safety, with a reported 48 fatalities on Colorado roads during the same month last year, half of which were attributed to drivers under the influence.
Notably, this time of the year emerges as the most perilous season concerning impaired driving, as highlighted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The impact of drunk driving resonates profoundly with survivors like Brittany Lamb, who vividly recalls a tragic incident on December 14, 1997. Lamb was involved in a devastating collision caused by a suspected drunk driver that claimed her aunt’s life. The night also saw a helicopter crash, resulting in the demise of all onboard. Although Lamb survived with severe injuries, the mental trauma of the incident persists.
The Colorado State Patrol’s records from last year depict a sobering reality, citing a total of 80 DUI cases between December 25 and January 1. El Paso County topped the list with 12 DUIs, followed closely by Jefferson County and Adams County, each recording 10 incidents.
Trooper Gabriel Moltrer of the Colorado State Patrol emphasized the importance of pre-planning and avoiding drinking and driving, urging individuals to establish safety plans before engaging in celebratory activities.
Sharing her harrowing experience, Lamb hopes her story serves as a cautionary reminder, imploring individuals to contemplate the consequences before taking the wheel under the influence.
Highlighting the substantial financial repercussions, the Colorado Department of Transportation estimates an average expense of $13,000 for a DUI offense. Citizens are encouraged to promptly alert authorities by dialing 911 upon suspecting an impaired driver on the road.
As law enforcement agencies intensify their vigilance post-holidays, the overarching message remains clear: prioritizing safety and responsible decision-making can prevent catastrophic incidents caused by impaired driving, safeguarding lives and communities from avoidable tragedies on the roadways.
