A video of a monk who appeared to be 163 years old went viral a few days ago.
Some people on the web have apparently bought into a hoax that a woman living today is 399 years old.
Since the monk’s popular tape was first posted to TikTok in January, many speculations have been made about its origins and meaning.
Learn the truth about the woman who, thanks to yet another Internet hoax, many people believe to be 399 years old.
Does the 399-year-old woman exist?
The pictures are obviously fake. Scientists would love to learn her secrets, and historians would love to hear her thoughts on everything from the French Revolution to the beginning of World War One if she had lived that long on Earth.
One study found that the greatest possible human life span was 150 years.
Peter Fedichev, research and senior author of the study from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, was quoted in Inverse as saying, “What we’re saying here is that the strategy of reducing frailty, so reducing the illness load, has just an incremental ability to extend your lifetime.”
This implies that people have a finite lifespan, even if they lead a perfectly healthy lifestyle and enjoy a great helping of good fortune.
There is about as much chance of a person surviving to be 399 as there is of the ghost of Karl Marx knocking on your door to demand that you pay the higher cost of your energy, or of Boris Johnson resigning as Prime Minister.

Who is Luang Pho Yai?
A Buddhist monk named Luang Pho Yai, also known as Luang Ta, had an erroneously high rumored age of 163 or 399.
The films of him praying for a young girl have gone viral, and he is a Thai man who has become a local celebrity.
“When the young grandson came to call Luang Ta, he could sense the love and care, so he knocked on his head for the great-grandchildren, Amen,” read the caption.
Luang Pho Yai is not yet the oldest person on the planet. French woman Jeanne Calment holds the record for longest lifespan, having lived to the ripe old age of 122 years and 164 days.
Who Is the Oldest Person Living?
Guinness World Records said on January 20 that a resident of Fukuoka, Japan named Kane Tanaka is the oldest person on the planet. The date of the woman’s birth, January 2, 1903, makes her 119 years old today.
A veteran of both World Wars, Kane Tanaka also lived through the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. Tanaka, who married her cousin when she was just 19, gave birth to four children and adopted a fifth.
When her husband and boys enlisted for the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, she was there to see them off and welcome them home.
Her husband of 90 years had gone away. Five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren have joined her family.
The woman with the record for longevity lives in a nursing home at the moment. Two cancer operations later, she seemed to be in good health.
