Twitch has delivered its opening salvo in the ongoing discussion around the platform’s acceptance of gambling streams. Twitch announced in a tweet on Tuesday night that, starting on October 18, it will no longer allow “streaming of gambling sites that feature slots, roulette, or dice games.”
Critically speaking, Twitch is not outlawing all gambling or even all streaming of the aforementioned forms of gambling. Sports betting, fantasy sports, and poker would be exempt, but streaming of slot machines, roulette, and dice games will be restricted to websites that are “regulated in the U.S. or other jurisdictions that provide sufficient consumer protection.”
One of the most well-known slot gambling websites that is aired on Twitch is Stake.com, which will be included in the list of gambling websites affected by the ban. On their feeds, prominent streamers like xQc and Trainwreckstv frequently highlight it.
The issue of gambling on Twitch has gained attention as rich streamers appear to advertise their services to youngsters, ostensibly to prevent gambling addictions. ItsSliker came forward earlier this week and admitted that he had defrauded other streams of hundreds of thousands of dollars to feed his addiction to sports betting.
Following that incident, prominent streamers including DevinNash, Pokimane, and Mizkif—who is currently involved in a different but connected scandal—proposed or supported a potential boycott of Twitch if the network didn’t outlaw gambling on the platform.
Now, it’s possible that action is no longer required. However, when the ban goes into place, sports betting—the type of gambling that sparked this latest discussion—will be exempt.
Prior to the adoption of its gambling restrictions on October 18th, Twitch promised to provide further information in a tweet.
