Sophie Alexandra Tweed-Simmons-Henderson is an American singer, television personality, fashion designer, actress, and model who promotes body positivity. She appeared in the reality television series, Gene Simmons Family Jewels, which featured Simmons and her family of four.
She is a strong advocate for body positivity and also owns a clothing line to promote the cause.
Early Life
Sophie is the daughter of Shannon Tweed (a Canadian actress and model), and Gene Simmons (an Israeli-American musician and bass player for Kiss). She was born in Los Angeles, California.
Sophie has dual American and Canadian citizenship.
At just 14 years of age, she began appearing on Gene Simmons Family Jewels which aired on A&E. The show, where she starred with her family, including her brother, ran for seven seasons from 2006-2012.
She attended Pitzer College in Claremont, California, and graduated with a degree in computer engineering and religious studies. She also played volleyball for the Pomona/Pitzer Sagehens during her college years.
She initially tried her best to avoid her parents’ career path. The reason she once explained was: “I avoided the [music and modeling world] for a long time because I didn’t want the comparisons between my parents and myself”.
Creating her own identity
In January 2012, Sophia, with the help of Dianne Watts (Mayor of Surrey, British Columbia), advocated for the creation of Sophie’s Place. It’s a partly government-funded child advocacy center.
Sophie and her family keep supporting The Centre for Child Development and Sophie’s Place Child and Youth Advocacy Centre by raising funds for the institutions. These organizations are: “a safe space where [children] can talk about their experience of physical, mental or sexual abuse with trained staff and law enforcement professionals.”
She went on to launch her body-positive clothing line for The Style Club in 2014. She entered modeling to promote body positivity and was also featured in the 2016 documentary Straight/Curve which focuses on the debate over body image in modeling.
She started her singing career in 2012 when she auditioned for the second season of the music competition show, X Factor. She did get in but was eliminated in the Bootcamp stage of the competition.
In June 2013, she sang with the Canadian vocal group The Tenors during their show in Los Angeles, California.
In 2015, Simmons released her debut single, “Kiss Me”, a cover of Sixpence non the Richer’s 1998 song by the same name. Since then, she kept releasing various songs.
Sophie has also released originals and one of her songs, “Black Mirror” debuted on Billboard‘s Dance Club Songs chart at Number 43 on April 14, and it remained on the list for ten weeks peaking at Number 20.
