He achieved records in every stroke he could compete in and for all distances during his four years of high school at Santa Clara High School. At age 16, he broke another world record in the 400 m freestyle.

He essentially ruled swimming from the mid-1960s until the early 1970s. At the 1965 Maccabiah Games, he captured four gold medals. He was only 15 years old, and it was his first international contest.

He set a record by winning five gold medals at the Pan American Games in 1967, which wasn’t broken until 2007. In 1968, he won two gold medals at the Olympics, and in 1969, he won five more in the Maccabiah Games.

At the Munich Summer Olympics in 1972, he took home seven gold medals. Before Michael Phelps broke the record with his eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he held the record for the most gold medals earned at a single Olympic Games.

Mark received his swimming instruction from Sherm Chavoor at Aden Hills Swimming Club. Mark Spitz has 17 national records and one global age group record to his name at the age of 10.

Spits relocated to Santa Clara at the age of 14, when he joined the Santa Clara Swim Club and underwent George F. Haines’ instruction. In 1966, when Mark was 16 years old, he won the 100-meter butterfly event in the AAU national championship.

After winning this one, he went on to win 23 more AAU titles. He entered the international swimming scene the following year, 1967, and achieved his first world record at the Small California Meet.

Mark Spitz participated in the Maccabiah international games when he was only 15 years old, much before this. At the competitions, he took home four gold medals, earning him the distinction of being the most outstanding athlete.

He again competed in the next year’s Maccabiah international games and took home six gold medals. At the Maccabiah International Open the next year, in 1985, he lit the torch. At the 17th Maccabiah international games, Mark successfully transitioned from a player to a member of the American delegation.
