American football quarterback and civil rights advocate Colin Rand Kaepernick was born on November 3, 1987. He is currently a free agent. He spent six seasons as a member of the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers (NFL).
In 2016, he knelt during the playing of the national anthem before NFL games in protest of racial inequity and police brutality in the country.
How Much Money Has Colin Kaepernick Made Over the Course of His Career?
American football player and social activist Colin Kaepernick is worth $20 million. Between 2011 and 2016, Colin played in six NFL seasons, making slightly more than $43 million in pay (before taxes and fees).
His highest NFL salary, $14.3 million, was earned in the 2016 campaign. He is also a political and civil rights activist, most known for kneeling during the playing of the national anthem at NFL games to denounce racial injustice and police brutality in the country.
Early Years
On November 3, 1987, Colin Rand Kaepernick was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Colin was given up for adoption by his natural mother, and Rick and Teresa Kaepernick adopted him as their third child. Kyle and Devon, the couple’s two elder children, were born.
After losing two prior boys to heart problems, the Kaepernicks made the decision to adopt a boy. Before moving to California when Kaepernick was four years old, the family lived in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. At Turlock, California’s John H. Pitman High School, he was a student-athlete with a 4.0 GPA.
He devoted much of his high school time to baseball, which led to multiple scholarship offers for college baseball. He was given the opportunity to attend the University of Nevada, but he preferred to concentrate on football. He was consistently rated as one of the top college quarterbacks in the country while playing football in college.
Throughout his collegiate football career, he won various awards and broke countless records. He received two awards for Offensive Player of the Year from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Additionally, Kaepernick is the only athlete in NCAA Division I FBS history to finish a career with 10,000 throwing yards and 4,000 rushing yards.

NFL Career
The Chicago Cubs selected Colin in the 2009 amateur draught, but Colin chose to stay in the NFL rather than accept their offer. He played as a backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2012 after being selected in the second round of the NFL Draft.
He was outstanding all season long in 2012, and he finally guided the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII. They were defeated 31–34 by the Baltimore Ravens. Colin guided the 49ers to the NFC Championship game in 2013, when they were defeated by the Seattle Seahawks.
In the 49ers’ third preseason game of 2016, Kaepernick opted to sit instead of standing for the playing of the American national anthem. It was a show of defiance against the nation’s institutionalized oppression, police brutality, and racial injustice. Kaepernick knelt during the anthem the following week and the rest of the regular season.
Both supporters and opponents of the protests expressed their views with great fervor. After President Donald Trump declared that NFL owners should “fire” players who demonstrate during the national anthem, Kaepernick’s decision to take a knee sparked a media frenzy that erupted in September 2017.
After that season, Kaepernick became a free agent. He didn’t get a team. As of this writing, he is still unsigned.
Record Contract
Colin and the 49ers came to a seven-year extension agreement in June 2014. Colin could have made up to $126 million from the deal and $61 million in potential guarantees under the terms of the agreement. A $12.3 million signing bonus and a $640,000 salary for the following season were also included in the agreement.
The only part of the contract that was completely guaranteed was the $13 million. Only if Colin sustained an injury that would have ended his career was the $61 million in potential guaranteed money guaranteed. At the time, it set a new record for contracts.
Colin’s basic compensation decreased by $2 million every year, per the terms of his contract, if he was not selected for either the first or second All-Pro team or if the 49ers did not compete in the Super Bowl the previous year (with Colin taking at least 80% of the snaps).
This resulted in a reduction of his $12.4 million basic pay to $10.4 million at the start of the 2015 season. Kaepernick learned that the 49ers were going to release him in March 2017.
In order to opt-out of his contract and become a free agent, he made this decision. After all, was said and done, Colin’s record-breaking $126 million contract brought in $39 million.
NFL Lawsuit And Settlement
In response to his choice to take a knee during the National Anthem, Colin filed a grievance against the NFL in 2017. He claimed that the league and owners conspired to prevent him from playing in the NFL. In February 2019, the case was confidentially resolved with an undisclosed amount.
Several sports news agencies indicated that the settlement sum might have been in the $60–$80 million range on February 18, 2019. It was discovered a month later that the actual settlement sum was probably closer to $10 million.
In 2011, Colin got his first Nike endorsement contract. After Colin remained without a team after 2017, many people speculated that Nike did not renew their deal. On the occasion of the “Just Do It” campaign’s 30th anniversary, Nike announced an advertisement campaign in 2018.
In the advertisement, Kaepernick was shown saying, “Have faith in something. even if it requires giving up everything.” In the end, Nike kept helping Colin and eventually announced him as a brand ambassador.
According to Yahoo NFL reporter Charles Robinson, Nike is still paying Colin a contract that is comparable to that of current top NFL athletes, which includes millions of dollars annually as well as royalties on a line of clothing with the Kaepernick name on it.

Personal Life
Since he was ten years old, Kaepernick’s family has kept an African spurred tortoise named Sammy as a pet. During his undergraduate years, Kaepernick visited a Baptist church, was confirmed as a Lutheran, and had Methodist baptism.
Late in 2015, Kaepernick started eating a vegan diet. Nessa Diab is a radio broadcaster and television host who Kaepernick reportedly began dating in July 2015. In February 2016, they made his relationship public.
In order to empower underprivileged youngsters and teach them about American history, legal rights, and self-empowerment, Kaepernick and Nessa launched the Know Your Rights Camp. The Know Your Rights Camp established a relief fund for those affected by the COVID-19 outbreak in April 2020. Kaepernick gave the fund $100,000.
Kaepernick launched Kaepernick Publishing in February 2020. Through both Audible and his publishing firm, Kaepernick will release a memoir.
Real Estate
2017 saw Kaepernick’s $3.075 million home sale in San Jose, California. The two-story home has about 4,600 square feet of living area, four bedrooms, five and a half baths, and other amenities.
A wall aquarium, a complete bar, a pool, a Jacuzzi, and a waterfall feature are available as amenities. Kaepernick spent a lot of money renovating the house after purchasing it in 2014 for $2.7 million.
In July 2016, Kaepernick paid $3.21 million for a two-bedroom luxury condo in New York City. According to reports, the Tribeca apartment has a garage, a swimming pool, a private fitness club, and a 24-hour concierge service. The same family trust that bought Kaepernick’s house in San Jose apparently purchased the 1,733-square-foot condo.
