News of a third season of Foundation has been circulating even before Apple TV+ officially announced that the science fiction series will be renewed, with the current chapter about to come to an end. Foundation is based on the Foundation book series by Isaac Asimov. Published in three parts between 1951 and 1953, the books were first published as a trilogy. Two further volumes were published in 1982 and 1986, and prequel novels were written in 1988 and 1993.
Inspired by The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, but set in a futuristic world of warring planets and a Galactic Empire, is the original trilogy that served as the basis for the Apple TV+ series. The stories were initially gathered as novellas and short stories. It makes sense that Foundation has attracted enough attention to keep viewers interested and clamoring for a season 3 given its intriguing idea, however, it’s unclear if the show will get a second season or not.
After season 2 ends, it will probably become more apparent what to expect from Foundation season 3, even though the plot involving Hari, Gaal, and Brother Day doesn’t seem to be finished. The first season of Fountain debuted in 2021 to mixed to excellent reviews. Jared Harris, who plays protagonist Hari Seldon, and Lee Pace, who plays antagonist Brother Day, one of a group of genetic clones that controls the Galactic Empire, were praised for their set designs and performances.
A second season, which debuted in 2023, followed the first, which received two Primetime Emmy nominations, two Visual Effects Society Awards, and two wins. News about the upcoming third season of Foundation suggests that production has already begun, while details are still unclear.
Foundation Season 3 Latest News
Since the second season of Foundation is still running on Apple TV+, there isn’t much information available just yet about season 3. On the other hand, the story and direction of the third season should start to become more apparent after the season closes on September 15. As of right now, there hasn’t been an official confirmation from Apple TV+ on the existence of a third season.
This has led to some uncertainty as reports from various outlets suggest that a third season was already given the go-ahead in August and September of 2023. Even the news that the third season was already in production surfaced. However, according to Tech Radar, author David S. Goyer declined to corroborate these rumors.
“We recently wrapped up season two about a month ago [May 2023], and a lot of what transpires in season three hinges on how well this season plays out in its initial weeks.”
In addition to Goyer, Lou Llobell, who plays Gaal Dornick, and co-star Leah Harvey, who portrays Salvor Hardin, both stated they have no idea. “I have no idea who spread that rumor. “Hopefully, though,” Llobell remarked. “I actually can’t talk about that,” Harvey continued. I’m not sure if season three will air.” Considering this, it is likely that they are bound by NDAs, therefore until Apple TV+ makes an announcement regarding the season 3 renewal of Foundation, nothing formal will likely be said.
Season 3 of Foundation Has Not Been Renewed
Regarding the season 3 renewal of Foundation, nothing is known. Though the second season is still airing on the streaming service, Apple TV+ has not yet commented on any additional seasons. Three weeks after the first season’s premiere, on October 7, 2021, Apple TV+ revealed the second season of the show.
It’s possible that the streaming service is delaying its decision to renew Foundation for a third season until after the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes are over. It is unlikely that the release date for Foundation season 3 will occur until 2025 if it is confirmed soon after the conclusion of the second season.
Where to Watch Foundation Season 3
If and when season three of Foundation is renewed, viewers can watch it on Apple TV+. Both the first and second seasons of the show are available in full on Apple TV+; the season two finale will premiere on Apple TV+ on September 15, 2023. Currently, there is just one method to watch Foundation because it is an Apple TV exclusive.
The Cast of Foundation Season 3
Although the whole cast of Foundation season 3 is still unknown, several of the characters from season 2 may be there. But since there was a 138-year time jump between the first and second seasons, it’s possible that if there is another significant time jump, the cast will also shift. Nevertheless, several characters survived the time jump because of the sci-fi elements of the show. Cast members who survived the time leap from season 1 to season 2 include Lee Pace’s Brother Day and Jared Harris’s mathematician Hari Seldon.
The cast of The Foundation season 3 does seem to be missing a few members, though, notably Harris’s Hari Seldon, who passed away in the second season’s sixth episode, “Why the Gods Made Wine.” Furthermore, Gaal Dornick witnessed Salvor Hardin die 150 years in the future, suggesting that Leah Harvey’s portrayal of him may be doomed. Since this is a science fiction show, they might still make a comeback in some capacity. Here is a look at the season 3 cast of Foundation based on the information that has been released thus far:
- Jared Harris as Hari Seldon
- Lee Pace as Brother Day
- Lou Llobell as Gaal Dornick
- Leah Harvey as Salvor Hardin
- Laura Birn as Eto Demerzel
- Cassian Bilton as Brother Dawn
- Terrence Mann as Brother Dusk
- Isabella Laughland as Brother Constant
- Kulvinder Ghir as Poly Verisof
- Ella-Rae Smith as Queen Sareth of Cloud Dominion
- Holt McCallany as Warden Jaegger Fount
- Rachel House as Tellem Bond
- Nimrat Kaur as Yanna Seldon
- Ben Daniels as Bel Riose
- Dimitri Leonidas as Hober Mallow
Who Might Be the Season 3 Creative Team for Foundation?
It’s unclear if the Foundation’s present producers, directors, showrunners, and other creatives will be back for season 3. But chances are, David S. Goyer will continue to write screenplays, at the absolute least. Josh Friedman and David S. Goyer were the production team’s authors when the Foundation went into development; however, once Friedman left, Goyer assumed complete responsibility for the show running.
Additionally, he collaborates with Isaac Asimov’s daughter Robyn Asimov to guarantee that Apple TV+ is devoted to her father’s artistic endeavors. Given Goyer’s extensive background in fantasy and sci-fi film and television, this worked out nicely. He developed the television series FlashForward, Constantine, and Krypton and wrote the scripts for the comic book films Blade, Man of Steel, and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Story for Foundation Season 3
Until the conclusion of the second season, it is unknown what the plot of Foundation season 3 would entail. Fans should anticipate yet another significant time jump in the third season of the show, given the significant one that occurred between the first and second seasons.
Not to mention the devastating revelation that Hari Seldon, the main character, passed away in the second season. David Goyer described this as “a 1,000-year chess game between Hari Seldon and the Empire, and all the characters in between are the pawns” when he came up with the concept for the Apple TV+ tale (via THR). According to that revelation, Hari might actually make a reappearance in the Foundation season 3 narrative.
