We’ve got an exclusive first look at Chicken Run 2, which will be available on Netflix in 2019.

As for the Aardman classic’s follow-up, it was first announced in 2020 that Aardman had teamed with Netflix, but the sequel was only officially confirmed in 2018. It then took another two years before we received any information about the movie, but it was worth the wait.

Aardman officially announced the plot and cast for the long-awaited Chicken Run sequel, officially titled Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, on January 20, 2022. The movie will be released in 2022.

So, what can we anticipate when Rocky, Ginger, and company make a triumphant return? Here’s everything you need to know about Chicken Run 2.

What’s the plot of Chicken Run 2?

Chicken Run 2

Aardman’s website contains a little more information regarding Chicken Run 2, despite the lack of specifics in the Twitter announcement.

At the conclusion of Chicken Run, Ginger and Rocky had made their escape and settled on an ideal island where the entire flock could be free from the fear of becoming meat pies. The synopsis for the sequel indicates that since we saw them last, the pair will have added a new member to the flock: a tiny chick named Molly.

A new scheme has been implemented on the Tweedy farm, and Ginger and Rocky are about to find out what it is: a sinister plot that threatens not only the hens there but all chickens everywhere. When Ginger and Rocky must leave their island retreat to stop the evildoers on the farm, they will have to break in. The studio is remaining mute about the nature of this new threat, but we have a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with the mass manufacture of consumer poultry goods.

Chicken Run 2 cast:

Chicken Run 2

While the sequel is bringing back some of the original cast members, there have been some substantial changes behind the scenes.

Zachary Levi and Thandiwe Newton are voicing Rocky and Ginger in Chicken Run 2, taking up the roles from Mel Gibson and Julia Sawalha, respectively. There’s been no official reason why the parts have been replaced, although Sawalha made her own comment in 2020.

“I have officially been plucked, stuffed & cooked,” she said, adding that she was recast for “sounding too elderly”.

Bella Ramsey provides the voice of Molly, the new addition to Ginger and Rocky’s family in the sequel.

Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton, and Lynn Ferguson will return as Babs, Bunty, and Mac, respectively, in the sequel. Fowler’s original voice actor, Benjamin Whitrow, passed away in 2017, therefore David Bradley will return to portray him in the film’s sequel.

Other recastings include Romesh Ranganathan and Daniel Mays taking over from Timothy Spall and Phil Daniels as clever rats Nick and Fetcher.

We’ll also be seeing some more new characters in the sequel with Josie Sedgwick-Davies playing Frizzle and Nick Mohammed as Dr Fry.

However, no other information has been provided concerning their characters.

What’s the release date for Chicken Run 2?

Chicken Run 2

Since Chicken Run 2 hasn’t even begun production yet and no official release date has been announced, all we can do is speculate as to when we could see it hit Netflix.

Even if work on the sequel begins in earnest in 2021, it’s unlikely that Chicken Run 2 will be finished until the middle of the following year. Animation in general is time-intensive – stop-motion even more so. It’s important to remember that each frame of the film needs to be shot independently and that the plasticine models must be altered ever-so-slightly between each frame (via National Film Board of Canada).

Because it took the animators of the original film days to make just a few seconds of footage, we can estimate that one minute of footage could be generated each week by doing a little math. A year’s worth of work on the sequel to Chicken Run would be unrealistic, given that the first film lasted just over an hour.

However, Netflix tends to value speedy turnaround times, and Aardman has had two decades of additional experience since producing Chicken Run, so they should be able to move along at a reasonable pace now. Chicken Run 2’s budget is still a mystery, but the more money Netflix is ready to invest in the film, the more animators Aardman can hire, and we’ll see the sequel sooner rather than later.

Assuming all goes according to plan, we may expect Chicken Run 2 to arrive on Netflix during the holiday season of 2022. Keep an eye on this page, as we’ll post the official release date here as soon as it’s announced officially.

Is there a trailer for Chicken Run 2?

Chicken Run 2

Obviously, since Chicken Run 2 won’t even be entering the early phases of production for another few months, there’s no trailer for us to check out at this time, and we’re not likely to see one for quite some time. Still, you can bet your bottom dollar that we’ll be keeping our finger on the pulse of Chicken Run 2, and we’ll be updating this piece with all the news suitable to report as soon as it becomes available.

Sam Fell, who oversaw Aardman’s 2006 computer-animated effort Flushed Away, will direct Chicken Run 2. A screenplay by Karey Kirkpatrick (Over the Hedge), John O’Farrell (who also worked on the original script), and Rachel Tunnard (who also contributed to the original script) will serve as his guide (Adult Life Skills). Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park will also act as a creative consultant for the film.
