Following an illness, Vernon Winfrey, Oprah Winfrey’s father, passed away at the age of 89 following a long fight with cancer.
On Saturday, July 9, Oprah’s digital website Oprah Daily reported his death, which also featured a statement from the renowned talk show host.
“We celebrated Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day on his lawn less than a week ago,” she tweeted, referring to a 4th of July party she called “Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day.”
It was a chance for Nashville residents to praise Vernon, a former city councilor, for his work.
“My buddy and gospel singer Wintley Phipps paid tribute to him with song.” In her statement, Oprah added, “He felt the love and delighted in it until he could no longer speak….
It was a tremendous privilege to watch him draw his last breath with his family by his side yesterday,” he says. We could feel the presence of Peace in the room as he died,” she continued in her statement, which was also shared on Instagram.

Vernon Shares Oprah with Vernita Lee
No, he and Oprah’s late mother Vernita Lee (Vernita Lee’s sister) were never married. Oprah was born to Vernita, who died in 2018 at the age of 83.
Vernita was only 14 when she gave birth to her. “My mother and father never married,” Oprah has previously stated.

His hairdressing business was still doing strong at the age of 86, which was just two years ago. Oprah bought her father’s business in 2012 and continues to work there.
She has previously commented on how Vernon’s barbershop offered her a new perspective on the hard work that many Black men put in to be decent fathers and financially support their families—just like her father.
They were diligent men who worked two or three jobs to maintain their families, she claimed. As far as I know, this is the story of Black fathers: the ones I grew up with and the ones I know.
He Was a City Councilman
Vernon was also a member of the House of Representatives and the State Senate. In addition to serving on the Metro Nashville Council for 16 years, he served as a trustee at Tennessee State University.
After Vernon’s death, Nashville Mayor John Cooper took to Twitter to pay respect to him. “I extend my sincere sympathies to Vernon Winfrey’s family.
In addition to his work on Metro Council, Vernon spent 16 years running his own barbershop and serving as a mentor to other young men in the neighborhood. “An Army veteran and deacon, he leaves a legacy of service,” he wrote.
He Was in The Military
During the 1950s, Vernon served in the United States Military, including the day Oprah was born on January 29, 1954. Oprah Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, in 1938.
Oprah Has Said Vernon ‘saved’ Her
Oprah has previously discussed how moving in with her father as a teen altered the “course” of her life. In 1986, she told the Washington Post, “I started playing out my need for attention, my need to be adored. “
“My mother didn’t have the time,” he said. She was a maid who came to work every day……. In my opinion, my mother may have tried to restrict my intelligence because she didn’t have the time for me..”
To this day, she still gives credit to her father for “saving” her. “It was a turning point in my life. ‘He saved my life,’ she recalled. “He simply understood what he wanted and expected.” “He would accept nothing less,” he said.
