After the release of Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2, Noah Schnapp discusses Will’s sexuality in light of the critical van scene between Will and Mike that was seen by fans all around the world. For the first time, Noah has confirmed that Will is gay.
In season one, it was hinted at, but you never truly knew, is it just him growing up slower than his friends??” With the passage of time, it has become a more tangible and obvious issue,” Noah told Variety.
“It’s now very evident that he’s gay and that he loves Mike to pieces. But prior to that, it was a gradual progression.
It’s done so well, in my opinion, because it’s so simple to turn a character suddenly queer.
People have approached him and said, “Wow, this Will character made me feel so fantastic,” he said. And that hit home for me in a big way.
When I was a child, that’s exactly how I was.’ My heart immediately soared when I heard that. They’re writing a realistic character with a realistic journey and a realistic struggle, and they’re doing it really well.”
The question of Will’s sexuality has come up several times in the last few years. In 2020, Noah told THR that Will’s sexuality was “sort of up to the audience.” Some people think Will is gay, asexual, or something else else.”
It might also be that he was trapped in the Upside Down for so long that all of his buddies grew up during the time he was absent, according to the actor.
At 17, the teen confessed that he and the rest of the audience had struggled with the question of Will’s sexuality up until lately. At the beginning of season 1, Noah admitted in an interview with Variety that he had no idea where the Duffer Brothers wanted to take his character.
I was learning together with the audience, so I guess that’s what I was doing. Because I’ve talked to them and seen the show, I know what they intend to do with it. Obviously, they aren’t telling me anything.
Because I’m such a spoilsport, they’ll never trust me with anything. As a result, I’m doing a lot of the work myself. Later, I realized that “Oh, this makes sense and this was deliberate.”
Season 4 had a critical sequence in which Will tried to show Mike his hidden painting in order to inspire him to be strong for Eleven.
Eleven had been “so lost” without Will, Will said to Mike. In his tears, Will said: “It’s just that she’s so different from the rest of the population and when you’re different, it can make you feel like you’re a mistake.”
You make her feel like she’s not making a mistake at all,” he says. ” Being different gives her courage to continue her struggle. Like she’s better because of it.
Weeping, Will turned away from Mike as his confidence and courage grew. All of Will’s comments to Mike regarding Eleven came from the depths of his soul. Despite his young age, Noah’s nuanced portrayal demonstrated his wide range as an actor.
Afterward, Will and Jonathan enjoyed a tender moment where Jonathan informed his brother that he’ll always be there for him “no matter what,” recognizing what Will has yet to say publicly.
Friends and family members haven’t yet learned of Will’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
On top of all this, Noah Schnapp explained that “this isn’t just a single layer thing of him suffering with coming out. Having been kidnapped by the Demogorgon and then abandoned by his buddies, he’s now afraid to come out since he doesn’t know if they’ll welcome him when he does.
Also, Eleven is like a sister to him, and he doesn’t want to harm her feelings by confessing his feelings for Mike. He’s thinking about a lot of different things. So I have to make sure that I’m communicating the depth of all his experiences,” he continues.
We’ll get one more season of Stranger Things. With the season 4 finale, Will feared what Vecna had in store for them.
For Will, Vecna is “still alive,” and he won’t stop until “taken everything,” as Mike told him. Season 5 will “focus more on Will and build that storyline,” Noah indicated, according to the Duffer Brothers. Will Byers will be the star of Season 5, for sure.
