After World War II ended, she started working as a grocer and the family moved across the sparsely populated Saskatchewan region for several years.

When she was nine years old, she contracted polio and spent a long time in the hospital; she also started smoking cigarettes at the time.

When she was eleven, her family uprooted and settled in Saskatoon.

As a child, Mitchell was fascinated with music, singing, and painting. During her polio, she would entertain other patients in the hospital with her singing.

Early Career and Breakthrough:

Mitchell worked as a singer and performer for The Depression Coffee House when she was in college, and she also sang on local television and radio shows.

When she was twenty, she made the decision to move to Ontario to pursue a career in folk singing, which meant she had to leave rural Western Canada for the first time.

While in Ontario, she began working as a folk musician for local gatherings and clubs. When she became pregnant in 1964, her lover dumped her. In 1965, unable to care for a kid of her own, she placed the infant girl for adoption.

“Urge for Going,” a song by folk singer Tom Rush, had been handed to him by Mitchell, and he recorded himself playing it in the late 1960s. As a result of other artists hearing him sing it, the song began to gain popularity among folk musicians.

It was the spring of 1968 when she signed with Reprise, and it was then that she published her debut album, “Song to a Seagull.” In spite of its low position on the Billboard 200 album chart, it was widely lauded by reviewers.

In 1969, she released her next album, “Clouds,” for which she received a Grammy for Best Folk Performance the following year. While it didn’t climb as high as her debut, “Ladies of the Canyon” did reach number 27 on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified platinum.

This album was a financial success and usually features on rankings of the greatest albums ever made.

After the album’s release, Mitchell continued on tour and then created two critically acclaimed albums, “For the Roses” and “Court and Spark.” In 1975, she garnered four Grammy nominations and a win for the later piece.

During this time, her musical approach had transitioned from pure folk to more experimental, jazz-inspired sounds. She ended the decade of the 1970s with the albums “The Hissing of Summer Lawns,” “Hejira,” and “Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter,” and she joined jazz musician Charles Mingus in 1979 for their album “Mingus.”

While her albums in the 1970s were commercially and critically successful, her musical move towards jazz perplexed her fans, and the albums weren’t as large hits as her earlier ones.
