Joel Scott Osteen was born in Houston, Texas, on March 5, 1963. Father John Osteen and mother Dolores Pilgrim raised him as one of six children. As a result of his father’s previous marriage, Osteen also has a half-brother who lived with the family while Joel was a kid. In 1981, Joel graduated from Humble High School and enrolled at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he studied radio and television communications. His father, a Southern Baptist minister, left him the Lakewood Church and its television ministry, which Joel now runs. For 17 years, he was the producer of his father’s TV sermons, and he started Lakewood’s television program. His father, John, died of a heart attack in January 1999.

In the two weeks following the death of his father, Joel assumed John’s position as pastor and televangelist, even though he had no formal religious education. The previous home of the NBA Houston Rockets basketball team, the Compaq Center, was purchased by Lakewood in 2003. It took 15 months and about $105 million to complete the renovations.
