A Look At James Caan’s Life
James Caan was born on March 26, 1940, in New York City to Sophie and Arthur Caan. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Germany. He grew up in Sunnyside, Queens, and completed his education in NYC as well.
He later went to Michigan State University for college studies. Two years later he transferred to Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. However, he never graduated from college.
During his MSU days, he wanted to play football but could not make it to the team. He was then intrigued by acting at Hofstra and was interviewed for, accepted to, and enrolled in New York City’s Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, where he studied for five years.
“I just fell in love with acting,” he later recalled. “Of course, all my improvs ended in violence.”
He began playing in off-Broadway theaters and soon enough gained fame. Caan’s first television appearance was in an episode of Naked City.
He appeared in a few episodes of other TV shows as well. His first film appearance was in Irma la Douce (1963) where he had a bit part as a US soldier.
According to Filmink magazine:
“People thought Caan was going to be a star pretty much from the get-go. And it’s not hard to see why. Watch him in his early movies and TV appearances, and he’s simply got “it”: he was handsome, virile-looking, and could act (New York trained, Broadway broken). Most of all, he had the X factor: a nervous energy and intensity that you can feel off the screen. A lot of stars take a while to warm up – Caan was good from the beginning.”
His career soared high after then. He acted in many successful films and established himself as a talented actor.
