Bonnie Lynn Hunt was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 22, 1961. Mother Alice, father Robert, and siblings Patrick, Cathy, Kevin, Carol, Tom and Mary were all Catholic.

In 1984, Hunt made her acting debut on American Playhouse as a foxtrot dancer in the show. She portrayed Carol Anne Smithson in the 1990 television series, Grand.
The producers of Saturday Night Live didn’t like her improvisational style, so she declined to join the cast.
Hunt made her film debut as Sally Dibbs in the 1988 film Rain Man, which she reprised for the remainder of the film.
She and David Letterman produced The Building, a live-action sitcom, in 1993.
