JK Rowling responded to those who questioned how she is able to sleep at night by saying that her royalty checks help alleviate “any pain,” in reference to her contentious views on transgender people.
Author of the hugely popular Harry Potter books and movie series, JK Rowling, has been under fire recently for her steadfast anti-trans and transphobic views.
The novelist, who occasionally writes under the pen name Robert Galbraith, was charged with transphobia after publishing a slew of controversial tweets in 2020.
Reposting transphobic tweets, openly identifying as a TERF (a feminist who excludes the rights of transgender women from their advocacy for women’s rights), returning her Human Rights award, and writing extensive personal essays that uphold transphobic ideologies are just a few ways Rowling has continued to reinforce her statements.
How do you sleep at night knowing you’ve lost a large audience from buying your novels, a Twitter user questioned Rowling. In response, she joked,
“The ache goes away quite soon,” I find after seeing my most recent royalty checks.
