Jerry Springer passed away after what his family called a “brief illness.” The renowned TV personality passed away at the age of 79.
The late television icon Jerry Springer passed away on Thursday at his home in a Chicago suburb, according to a statement released to ET by Springer’s family.
Jene Galvin, a lifetime friend and family spokesperson, said, “Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried, whether that was politics, broadcasting, or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word.” Remembering his intelligence, heart, and humor will help ease the pain of his loss, but he can never be replaced.
Springer’s spokeswoman confirmed to ET that he passed away from pancreatic cancer. The Jerry Springer Show, Springer’s long-running tabloid talk show, premiered in 1991 and is still airing in syndication as of 2018.
In 2016, during an exclusive visit to the set of The Jerry Springer Show, Springer told ET, “Anyone can be a talk show host.” To host a talk show, you need to master these three skills. To be able to respond appropriately to “You did what?” Get away from here! Just a moment, please. You’re set for life if you can deliver those three lines.
In 2019, Springer began hosting a new tv court show called Judge Jerry on a national syndicate. After three seasons, the show was discontinued in 2022. In October, Springer appeared on The Masked Singer for the last time. He sang “The Beetle.”
Among his other accomplishments, he and his partner, Kym Johnson-Herjavec, made it all the way to the top five on the third season of Dancing With the Stars.
Springer went to New York City when he was four years old after his birth in London. He went on to get degrees from Tulane and Northwestern’s law school before serving in the US Army Reserves.
Springer served as mayor of Cincinnati for one term beginning in 1977. He later ran in the Democratic primary for governor of Ohio in 1982 but lost. Katie, his daughter, and Evelyn, his sister, are all that remains of him.
The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, anyone who wishes to honor his memory do something charitable or donate to a cause close to their hearts. Remember the wise words of Jerry Springer: “Take care of yourself, and each other.”
