Desmond Howard, a former Heisman Trophy winner and current anchor of ESPN’s College GameDay, said Monday that a tumor in his middle finger was successfully removed after surgery.
Howard posted photos of himself on Instagram soon after surgery, along with the caption, “Dr said the surgery went well, the tumor was removed.” Yet, obviously, I haven’t come down from the sky yet. The infamous “middle finger” is back in full force!
Just before the removal was to take place, Howard announced on social media that he was undergoing the procedure. He uploaded a photo of himself in the hospital bed, middle finger raised, beaming. In the caption, he explained the situation.
“Enjoy your Monday! Howard posted on Instagram before his operation, “Context is always crucial.” A nurse inquired, “Which finger do we plan to operate on today?” This one, I said in response. She had a terrific belly chuckle.
After winning the 1991 Heisman Trophy with the Michigan Wolverines—only the second player to do so and the first since 1940—Howard’s claim to fame on the gridiron remained the same. He later rose to become one of the finest special teams players of all time and was selected with the No. 4 overall choice in the 1992 NFL Draft. He even added a Super Bowl victory and subsequent MVP with the Packers in 1997 to his list of accomplishments.
He was the only receiver in Big Ten history to ever lead the conference in scoring during his Heisman Trophy season, accounting for 138 points. He caught 61 passes for 960 yards and 19 touchdowns while setting or tying 12 single-season Michigan records and five NCAA marks. He ran for 165 yards on 12 carries, adding two additional touchdowns.
He went on to win the Heisman Trophy with the second-largest winning margin in the award’s history. In 1991, he was also given the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Trophy.
Upon his retirement from the NFL, Howard joined ESPN’s College GameDay. He is now a regular on Saturday morning’s premier college football pre-game show alongside Rece Davis, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Pat McAfee, and David Pollack.
