What happened to Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Russell Gage?
Another NFL player has been admitted to the hospital with a horrible injury, just two weeks after Damar Hamlin, a superstar for the Bills, collapsed on the field after sustaining a cardiac arrest.
Russell Gage, a wide receiver with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has been discharged from the hospital after suffering an injury during Monday’s NFL Wild-Card playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys.
When Gage was hit across the neck on a second down play at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium, the game was stopped with two minutes and 55 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Gage looked to attempt to stand up but was unable, and the medical staff surrounded him swiftly.
“They took him to the hospital right now, he has a concussion. They’ll also test him for potential neck injuries,” Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said in the postgame news conference. When asked if Gage had movement in his extremities, Bowles replied: “His fingers were moving when he was down there. I don’t know about the rest.”
What is Russell Gage’s condition now?
The 26-year-old updated fans on his condition in a tweet published on the afternoon of January 17, the day after he’d been admitted to the hospital. “I appreciate all of the texts, calls, thoughts and prayers you all have expressed towards my family and I,” he wrote. “I just wanted to let you all know that I’m doing great and in great spirits! Thank you!”
On Monday, January 2, 2023, Bills safety Damar Hamlin slumped on the field following a fairly routine tackle and required CPR before being taken to the hospital. Before an ambulance arrived to take Hamlin to the hospital, he would remain unconscious for more than 18 minutes while receiving treatment on the field. CPR and an AED were both used.
On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, nine days after collapsing on the football field, Hamlin was released from the hospital. The Buffalo Bills announced that Hamlin will “continue his rehabilitation at home and with the Bills” in a statement posted on their official Twitter account.
To better safeguard its players, both technology and the game’s laws are improving. The Use of Helmet regulation, initially implemented in 2018, will be updated in 2022 to prohibit players from initiating contact with an opponent’s helmet in any area. This constitutes a foul. Players may be thrown to the ground as long as the tackle is not deemed “reckless or likely to inflict injury,” which is at the referee’s discretion. Tackles must be done below the shoulders and above the knees.
