Lang was born into a Jewish household in Brooklyn.
Lang left New York University in 1967 and relocated to Coconut Grove, Florida to start a head shop. After promoting a number of concerts in the Miami area in 1968, Lang co-produced the 1968 Miami Pop Festival with Marshall Brevets.
On the first day, May 18, it attracted over 25,000 people and featured performances by Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, John Lee Hooker, Arthur Brown, and Blue Cheer. The second day’s (May 19) midday rainstorm caused the tournament to stop early.

Professional Career
The 1970 documentary film Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music included Michael Lang in a number of scenes.
With collaborators Roberts, Rosenman, and co-producer John Scher, Lang also produced Woodstock ’94. With John Scher and Ossie Kilkenny, Lang produced Woodstock ’99.
Lang made plans to look at cities for a potential 50th-anniversary event in 2019 in May 2014. The official Woodstock 50 festival will take place August 16–18, 2019, at Watkins Glen, New York, according to a statement from Lang on January 9, 2019.
The event was ultimately postponed due to several logistical challenges, funding concerns, and three location changes. Hopes for a 50th anniversary Woodstock celebration were dashed by the development of COVID-19.
The Altamont Free Concert, which some dubbed “Woodstock West” on December 6, 1969, was not produced by Lang. However, Lang was requested to help arrange a last-minute move from Sears Point Raceway to the Altamont Speedway, close to Tracy, California, by the Rolling Stones and Grateful Dead.
The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were all scheduled to perform at the concert, which was originally scheduled for Golden Gate Park.
More than 40 albums by a variety of musical performers, including Karen Dalton, Betty Davis, and Mississippi Fred McDowell, were produced and released by Just Sunshine Records, which Lang owned and ran.
Along with Joe Cocker, Rickie Lee Jones, Willie DeVille, Tarkan, and Spanish recording artists El Ultimo de la Fila, Lang also served as manager for a number of well-known international recording acts. From 1971 through 1974, Famous Music Group, a division of Gulf & Western, operated the label and handled distribution.
