The Godfather Part II (1974) has a large cast of fictional characters, most of them inspired by actual people from history. Meyer Lansky, a Florida-based gangster, and Hyman Roth, played by Lee Strasberg, have much in common. Hyman Roth is a lot like Meyer Lansky.

Lansky, much like Roth, was a significant figure in Jewish-American organised crime and maintained close relations to the Italian Mafia. After the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and the rise of communist revolutionary Fidel Castro, who nationalised the country’s hotel casinos and outlawed gambling, the infamous casino business in Havana was dismantled. Lansky played a significant role in the operation of this business before it was destroyed.

The National Crime Syndicate, a multi-ethnic American crime ring, is believed to have been founded at a conference in Atlantic City in May 1929 by Johnny Torrio of the Chicago Outfit, whose bodyguard Al Capone would later inherit his empire. Lansky was instrumental in developing the National Crime Syndicate and Lucky Luciano, an Italian-American mobster many consider the father of the organised crime. In addition, Lansky was a close associate of Bugsy Siegel, who was the model for the character of Moe Green in the 1972 film The Godfather (Alex Rocco).

However, Lansky escaped to Herzliya Pituah in 1971 to avoid federal tax evasion charges, in contrast to Roth’s goal of merely retiring and living in Israel by the Law of Return. In the end, though, neither of them is allowed entry into the nation because of their criminal histories. Lansky was extradited to the United States in 1973, and the following year, Rocco Lampone shot and murdered Roth at the Miami airport (Tom Rosqui). As a consequence of Roth’s participation in the unsuccessful murder attempt on Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino) in the beginning of the movie, he is sentenced to death by the film’s director.

Even though Lansky was later acquitted of all criminal charges, he passed away in 1983 from lung cancer.
