She was an English actress, Helen Elizabeth McCrory OBE (August 17, 1968–April 16, 2021). The Importance of Being Earnest was her first theatrical role after graduating from the Drama Centre London. Acting credits also include Lady Macbeth at Shakespeare’s Globe, Olivia in Twelfth Night in the West End, and Rosalind in As You Like It in the Broadway production at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

McCrory was conceived on August 17th, 1968, in Paddington, Greater London. Her parents, Iain McCrory, a diplomat from Glasgow, and Ann (née Morgans), a Welsh physiotherapist, married in 1974. In her family, she was the oldest.

A year in Italy followed her education at Queenswood School in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. After returning to the UK, she enrolled in the Drama Centre in London to pursue a career in acting.

Friends learned of Helen McCrory’s cancer diagnosis barely a few days before her death.

It was only later that David Harewood, who worked with Helen’s husband Damian Lewis on the show Homeland,’ learned of Helen’s sickness.

“Damian got in touch a couple of days before the news broke, he let us all know,” he told the Daily Mirror. All of it was extremely distressing.

It was a complete mystery to everyone. We had no idea what she was going through.

“It was both shocking and heartbreaking. Damian did a fantastic job of addressing the situation in front of the media.

He and their two young children are in my thoughts and prayers,” I said.

Damian, Helen’s husband and father of her two children, Manon, 14, and Gulliver, 13, confirmed her death last month.

Manon and Gulliver were born as a result of McCrory’s marriage to actor Damian Lewis on July 4, 2007. When not living in Tufnell Park, they also owned a second property in Sudbury, in Suffolk.

An honorary patron of London children’s organization Scene & Heard was McCrory.

The couple donated $1 million to Feed NHS during the COVID-19 epidemic, a program that provides NHS workers with meals from high-end eateries. By early April 2020, they had raised that amount for the charity.
