The 1989 original movie is a musical that is partially based on the same-named fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, the father of fairy tales. Ariel’s curiosity about people sends her on a journey filled with magic, romance, and adventure—as well as a contract with the devil. The malevolent sea witch Ursula is a close enough substitute for the devil, if not quite.
Alan Menken, who originally composed the score for The Little Mermaid, will return to do so and will work with one of the movie’s producers, Lin-Manuel Miranda, to create brand-new songs.
When is The Little Mermaid releasing?
The Disney live-action film adaptation of The Little Mermaid will debut on May 26, 2023. The film, which is directed by Rob Marshall from a screenplay by David Magee, centers on Ariel, the youngest daughter of King Triton, who is enthralled by the world of land dwellers above the ocean’s surface.

The Little Mermaid Cast
There is no doubt that the Little Mermaid cast is exceptional. The film stars not just Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Being the Ricardos) and Tony winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, Snowpiercer), but also the incomparable and hilarious actress Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids, Nine Perfect Strangers).
Halle Bailey is the actress portraying Ariel, the beloved mermaid. Bailey’s career in the music industry has produced some of her most notable achievements, whilst Halle’s breakthrough acting role has been starring Sky Forster in the sitcom Grown-ish.
In 2015, she and her sister Chloe secured a contract with Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment label under the name Chloe x Halle. Since then, the group has received four Grammy nominations.
