Lee Jung-Jae, the star of “Squid Game,” creates history by winning Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the 2022 Emmy Awards.

Lee Jung-Jae won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series prize at the 74th annual Television Academy Awards for his outstanding performance in the internationally acclaimed South Korean survival drama series “Squid Game.”

Lee Jung Jae won the award ahead of actors like Jason Bateman for “Ozark,” Brian Cox for “Succession,” Bob Odenkirk for “Better Call Saul,” and Jeremy Strong for “Severance,” among others.

“For making a serious situation we all face come to life so beautifully on the screen with a great storyline and amazing images,” the actor hailed the show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.

Earlier this year, Lee took home the SAG Award in the same category.

‘Squid Game‘ also made history by becoming the first non-English-language program to be nominated for an Emmy in the main drama category and winning the writing award.

The Korean mega-hit received nominations for Lee and the Outstanding Drama Series category. The series received 14 nominations in total.

According to Hwang, who spoke to Deadline at the Emmys tonight, Lee’s character Seong Gi-hun, also known as Number 456, will seek vengeance in the following season.

On Monday night, Jung-Jae attended a performance at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with his cast mates.

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of “Squid Game,” made history by being the first non-English language drama series director and the first Asian filmmaker to win the drama series category.

In addition, actors including Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-Joon, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-Su, Heo Sung-Tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung are featured in the show’s cast.

The show centers on a competition in which 456 participants, all of whom are experiencing extreme financial difficulties, put their lives in danger by participating in a series of dangerous children’s activities in an effort to win more than 5 billion won.

Squid Game was only intended to last for one season, but its enormous popularity has caused things to change. For Season 2, Lee and Hwang will both return.
