Aquaman 2 has been one of the DCEU’s most awaited releases. The sequel, titled “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” follows up on the events that led up to Arthur Curry becoming Aquaman and show what happened after Atlantis declared war on the surface world.
In this piece, we’ll go over everything we know about Aquaman 2 so far, from the movie’s cast to its plot points. With The Flash movie having a rough time at the box office, Aquaman 2 could be DCEU’s best chance to finally break through.
Aquaman 2 All Set for Release Date
The United States premiere of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set for December 25, 2023. Due to the effects of COVID-19 on the workload of visual effects vendors, Warner Bros. pushed back the release date from December 16, 2022, to March 17, 2023.
As Warner Bros. Discovery attempted to spread out marketing and distribution costs, the release date was pushed back to December 2023.
Aquaman 2 Cast
Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta)
Dolph Lundgren
Patrick Wilson
Amber Heard is reportedly reprising her role as Mera, though her screen time has been drastically cut. The two have reconciled after her high-profile divorce from Johnny Depp.
That’s not all, though; Aquaman 2 introduces a few new faces as we travel to the Lost Kingdom. Stingray, played by Jani Zhao, and Karshon, played by Indya Moore, will both appear for the first time in this sequel. Hardcore Batfleck fans can rejoice, as reports indicate that Ben Affleck’s Batman will also appear in the film. James Wen helmed the film with a script by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.
Aquaman 2 Plot
Now that DCEU isn’t so concerned with making a Marvel Cinematic Universe–style shared universe for its superheroes, we don’t know much about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom beyond the fact that David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is writing the script. The writer has collaborated with Aquaman’s director, James Wan, on two previous Conjuring films.
Wan hinted at DC’s virtual FanDome event in August 2020 (via Deadline(opens in new tab)), saying, “I think the second one is a little bit more serious, a little bit more relevant in the world we are living in today.” “That seems to be the direction it wants to take.”
After donning the iconic gold and green armor of Aquaman, obtaining the Trident of Atlan, and ascending to the throne of Atlantis, what does this mean for Arthur Curry? Even though he and the water-controlling Mera seemed to have things worked out by the end of the first film, Hollywood norms and the requirements of a good story suggest that things won’t be so peachy in the sequel.
In fact, history shows that Orm won’t make life easy for his half-brother. However, did Wilson’s cryptic #brothersdon’tshakehandsbrothersgottahug hashtag on Instagram(opens in new tab) during production confuse things a little? What are the chances of mending fences with extended family?
Warner’s official synopsis for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom suggests that Aquaman “must forge an easy alliance with” a “unlikely ally” in order to “protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.” Could this “unlikely ally” be Orm?
