In the CTV drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation, she played Mia Jones in her debut performance. Later, she gained notoriety for her roles as Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce in The Vampire Diaries, a supernatural drama on The CW.

Dobrev was born on January 9, 1989, in Sofia, Bulgaria, to computer expert Kamen Dobrev and artist Michaela Dobreva. Her sibling is older.
She was reared in Scarborough, Toronto after her family moved to Canada when she was two years old. She returned to Bulgaria with her mother for two years when she was ten years old.
