In 2017, Cheryl Burke and Matthew Lawrence resumed their relationship after a ten-year hiatus. However, five years later in January 2022, they ended their relationship permanently. According to documents obtained, the former couple finalized their divorce in September.
Both of them agreed to honour the prenuptial agreement that was signed before they got married, they also agreed to waive any spousal support and to pay their own legal fees.
What happened after they resumed their relationship in 2017?
In May 2018, Lawrence proposed, and soon after, the couple moved in together. The couple exchanged vows in May 2019 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego, after dating for a year. The actor gave Burke a dog named Ysabella in honour of their first wedding anniversary in May 2020.
Four months later, Burke claimed that soon after she and Lawrence got engaged, she made the decision to give up drinking. After the death of her alcoholic father in September 2020, she marked two years of recovery.
“ He is just my rock, I don’t know where I would be without him,” Burke said on Good Morning America in reference to Lawrence’s support on her sobriety journey. “ When you make a decision, a big decision, a life-altering decision, your friends will change and, you know, some people will support it. Some people won’t and at the end of the day, you have to be okay with this.”
Cheryl addressed the split via Instagram in February 2022. “I know I have always said I’m an open book with you guys, I do strive to be, and in writing this I’ve realized there really isn’t an easy way to announce that my marriage is ending, I hope you can understand that I will not be commenting any further at this time and am asking for understanding and privacy. Thank you all for all the kind words and support you’ve given me.”

Burke returned to television for the Dancing With the Stars season 31 premiere less than a week after settling her divorce.
The Californian said that after her first dance with partner Sam Champion that the reality competition has been a part of many “different chapters” in her life, including her engagement and the dissolution of her marriage.
Although Burke and Lawrence were legally divorced as of October 2022, their custody battle over the dog Ysabella remained unresolved.
She said on a “Burke I the Game” podcast episode that a trial to decide who would acquire the French bulldog would take place in January 2023.
Burke expressed her heartbreak over the circumstance. She remarked that Lawrence had given her the puppy as a gift on their first wedding anniversary, adding, “It stinks because to me it’s simply cruel. I’m hoping that he calls it off and that this quickly fades down considering that you’re essentially stealing my daughter from me.”
