The Wade family is celebrating as Dwyane’s transgender daughter, Zaya Wade, has been given permission to change her name and gender.
According to TMZ, a Los Angeles County judge approved the 15-year-old’s legal identity on Friday after her “proud” father had asked the court for permission in August 2022.
As of right now, the adolescent is legally a woman; her full legal name is Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade.
Zaya Wade: A Brief About Dwayne Wade’s Child
Zaya Wade is a young activist and advocates for the LGBTQ+ community. She first gained public attention in 2020 when her parents, former NBA player Dwyane Wade and actress Gabrielle Union, announced that she had come out as transgender. Since then, Zaya has become a powerful voice for trans youth and has used her platform to raise awareness and promote acceptance and inclusion.
Zaya stood alongside her father, half-sister Kaavia James, and Union, who in 2014 became her stepmother.
In a video that was posted, Zaya could be seen climbing some stairs. Union jokingly sang “There She Is, Miss America” as she followed her.
This isn’t the first time Zaya has worn a glam outfit. She appeared in many stunning photographs in September 2022 to show off her new, longer hairstyle.
Zaya’s journey to self-discovery and acceptance has not been easy. Like many trans youths, she has faced discrimination, bullying, and isolation. In an interview with her father, Zaya described the pain she felt when she was misgendered or when people refused to acknowledge her true identity. “It’s like they’re not accepting me for who I am,” she said. “It hurts.”
Despite these challenges, Zaya has remained resilient and determined to make a difference. She has spoken out about the importance of supporting trans youth and creating safe spaces where they can be themselves without fear of judgment or rejection.
In an interview with Michelle Obama on her podcast, Zaya emphasized the need for empathy and understanding. “You have to put yourself in other people’s shoes,” she said. “It’s not just about you and your beliefs and your opinions.”
Zaya’s advocacy work has not gone unnoticed. She has been praised by LGBTQ+ activists and celebrities for her courage and strength. In 2020, she was honored with the “Trailblazer” award at the GLAAD Media Awards, which recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact in advancing LGBTQ+ acceptance and visibility in the media.
Zaya’s story is an important reminder of the challenges that trans youth face and the importance of creating a more inclusive society. According to the Human Rights Campaign, nearly 40% of trans adults report having attempted suicide, and trans youth are at a higher risk of depression, anxiety, and suicide than their cisgender peers. The lack of acceptance and support from family, peers, and society can have a devastating impact on their mental health and well-being.
