He sustained a catastrophic collision just before the finish line of Stage 1 of the 2020 Tour de Pologne after Dylan Groenewegen changed his course and pushed Jakobsen into the barriers.
On August 7, 2020, the race’s organizers announced that Jakobsen had emerged from a coma and was in “great condition.”
On August 18, 2020, Jakobsen declared that he was “happy to be alive” following the collision.
Jakobsen returned to competitive racing on April 11, 2021, as part of the Presidential Tour of Turkey.
