Priyanka Chopra Jonas, 40, of Baywatch and Citadel fame, and Sam Heughan, 43, of Outlander fame, star in the new romantic comedy Love Again. Mira (Chopra Jonas) and Rob Burns (Heughan), a journalist, have a “meet cute” after she sends Rob a series of affectionate texts from the phone number that belonged to her late fiancé. He decides to meet Mira since she intrigues him. Céline Dion plays herself in the film as well.
Chopra Jonas and Walter Scott of Parade got down to chat about the movie, her relationship with Nick Jonas, and more.
Walter Scott: Of All the Romantic Comedy Scripts out There, What About Love Again Made You Say Yes to It?
Chopra Jonas: The German film [SMS für Dich] was one of my favorites of all time. The mood was lovely, and it was quite endearing. My conversation with our director, Jim [Strouse], however, left me with the impression that I was free to skip the German film if I so desired. However, we’d like for it to have the genuine feel-good quality of classic romantic comedies. Fill you with love and happiness.
I had the same reaction when I read the German translation. Working with Sam, Céline [Dion], and Jim evoked a wide range of responses in me, from mild to intense. In my opinion, we had a fantastic team. I felt encouraged because it occurred during the COVID outbreak. It’s an inspiring film about regaining hope.
When Your Character Meets Celine, She Is Completely Starstruck
It’s thrilling to me that I got to be a part of Céline Dion‘s acting debut because she is one of the most iconic singers of our time. But she’s hilarious and charming, and she showed up ready to work. It’s great that the world will hear new music from Céline and see her incredible, captivating self on screen.
Nick Jonas, Your Husband, Stars in It. how Did He End Up In the Cast? Was It a Case of “Oh, Why Don’t We Get Nick to Play That Part?”
The latter was correct. We were filming in the year 2020. Nick was not cast in this role at first. However, while out to dinner with the director, I mentioned, “Oh, my gosh, there’s a slow, sloppy kiss written into the scene.” Plus, I was uttering a “Ugh.” Kissing a random person is a certain way to get a person’s blood boiling. And he said, “What if we ask Nick since he’s here anyway?”
Since this was one of my first international trips under COVID, Nick made the trip to London to help me get established. So, it was pure chance that he showed up. We asked him, and he took it like a champ. The day he filmed the sequence was the most hilarious of the entire shoot. I don’t know where to start; it was nonstop hilarity. There was nothing but laughter.
And it was great fun to have my hubby there with me. It was humorous because he was acting in a way that runs counter to our own. It was great that Nick drove me to London.
How Quickly Did You and Sam Heughan Become Fast Friends?
We did, in fact, do that. He’s a good man on top of being hilarious and entertaining. If you’re a fan of Sam, you’ll be happy to hear that he isn’t only a good guy in this film, but a truly excellent human being, a model gentleman, and a very considerate co-star.
It was a tough time for all of us actors when we first started working on this film, but we had each other, and that was awesome. What if I came over? We used to spend a lot of time together—Sam, me, Sofia [Barclay], and the rest of the cast—because we were all we had. To having friends you could count on and get along with made life so much better.
That Which Defines Your Personality Your Actual Daughter, Malti, Is Just 15 Months Old, and Mira Writes Children’s Books. Which of Your Favorite Books for Kids Do You Read to Her?
Oh my goodness, there are a lot of them. My favorite novel by Hoda [Kotb] is I’ve Loved You Since Forever. Llama Llama Red Pajama is one of our favorite children’s books. In particular, she adores Peter Rabbit. And I read her Indian tales, too.
You Also Have a Role in The Spy Thriller Citadel, Available on Prime Video. how Much of Your Stunt Work Is Original?
Citadel is not only its own realm but also an entirely new universe. I began my film career in Bollywood with a focus on action films. Since I’ve worked on an action-packed TV program (Quantico), I’m comfortable with stunts, and the Russo brothers’ fantastic stunt team was a huge asset to Citadel.
Seventy-five to eighty percent of my stunts were done by me. I enjoy performing my own stunts because it allows me to really immerse myself in the role, but I also had the help of some incredible stunt professionals who made me seem even better. I loved that show and thought the actors were fantastic. It’s a tough show, it takes a lot of work.
You Were on An Equal Salary with The Citadel Staff. in The End, It All Comes Down to What You Believe In
Indeed, I do. I’ve been working to increase the number of women in leadership and policymaking roles. I’ve had a 22-year career and shared the spotlight with many other actors as a co-lead, but it wasn’t until I started working at Amazon Studios, where the studio president is a woman named Jennifer Salke, that I finally felt like an equal.
When women hold decision-making roles, they pave the way for other women to succeed and earn respect. I hope to keep this dialogue going so that future generations won’t have to deal with the same issues we did.
Unfinished, Your Autobiographical Short Story Collection, Was Published in 2021. Are You Still in The Making? What Exactly Do You Have in Mind for That Development?
To me, it seems like we’re all still developing. When I open my eyes in the morning, I’m a new person. I try to look at things in a different way. Priorities shift as circumstances do. Don’t even try to claim, “I know myself.” Not knowing myself entirely is something I’d rather avoid.
I believe that the unexpected pleasures of life are invaluable and that we should take full use of them, so I still consider myself incomplete. I pray that I will always be afforded the chance to work with the most talented people I know and to have the incredible platform I do.
Being a member of an environment that promotes cultural change is one of my greatest joys. I’d like to think that I’ll be able to keep adding to it forever.
How Did You Muster the Guts to Give Up Your Successful Bollywood Career and Relocate to The United States?
I aimed to broaden my perspective in order to consider fresh options. My upbringing fostered a fierce determination in me. My parents showed me that it was possible to accomplish everything you put your mind to. My mother was a doctor, but she switched fields several times. They uprooted when I transferred to Mumbai for work, with my father going from the military to private practice.
Not once did any of them grumble; rather, they just said, “OK, let’s start another clinic.” There was never any sentimentality for any one spot or possession. We’d always find a solution if we were all in the same room. That’s why I share your perception. What I’m trying to say is that I’m not as naive as I look. But as long as I have my loved ones and friends by my side, I can continue working and learning from experience.
That, if you desire change, is equally vital, in my opinion. You need an open mind and the ability to adapt if you want to succeed in anything. That can never happen to someone who has a solid grasp on who they are and is confident in their own abilities. To succeed, you need to accept that “Okay, everyone can make mistakes and I want to learn.” Being a lifelong learner is, thus, crucial. However, that is how I was brought up by my parents. Both my career and my life reflect their sense of adventure.
You’ll Soon Be Seen in Heads of State Alongside John Cena and Idris Elba. Tell Us What You Know About It
We begin shooting as soon as I finish my Love Again promotional obligations. The cast is fantastic. Amazon Studios is amazing, and so are the individuals that work there. In my opinion, the film is going to be a lot of fun.
I mean, why wouldn’t I want to spend the summer in London with my family if I could do so in the company of two such astoundingly gifted men? It’s an action comedy, so there will be a lot of preparation involved, but I believe it’s going to be a lot of fun, so I’m looking forward to it.
