The reason I’m so uneasy is that I’m experiencing somewhat of a crisis of faith,” Nicole explained. “I chose to become a Muslim, and Mahmoud never tried to push me to do it. Sometimes I wonder if my problems stem from my misunderstanding of Islam or from my failure to follow Mahmoud’s principles.”
Nicole and Mahmoud, their marriage is in trouble because she refuses to conform to his standards for a Muslim wife.

While teasing Mahmoud, Nicole’s other relatives also pointed and laughed, saying him it was his job to teach Nicole about Islam and encourage her to start wearing a hijab again.
One small step at a time, they told him. “But you’ll need to convince her. For it to be practical, she must first approve of it as something she would actually want to wear.”
While his uncle was stern, he was told to teach his niece the difference between right and wrong.
Mahmoud made an effort to convey his family’s advice to Nicole, but she was closed off since she felt that she had already given too much.
Nicole opened up about her firm adherence to principles in an interview. It’s nobody’s business why I’m not wearing the veil anymore, which is why I don’t answer when people ask me why I stopped. In other words, “I don’t want to be impolite.”
