After the public release of body camera footage made the Memphis police killing of Tyre Nichols more clear, people all over the country mainly held peaceful protests against police brutality.
Nichols, a 29-year-old Black driver, was pulled over on January 7 for driving too fast, according to the police. Police poorly beat Nichols after he tried to run away on foot, a recently released police video shows. He died in the hospital three days after that.
Describe Tyre Nichols.
According to The Associated Press, Nichols was a father of a 4-year-old son and an avid skateboarder and nature photographer from Sacramento, California. He moved to Memphis just before the pandemic and later started working for FedEx, one of the city’s biggest employers. The New York Times said that Nichols had worked for the company for about nine months before he died.
At a memorial service, Nichols’ step-grandmother Lucille Washington said, “He was one of those people who made everyone happy.”
Body cam footage from the police shows a violent arrest.
On January 8, police said that Nichols was arrested after a traffic stop that led to two fights with officers. During the first argument, Nichols ran away from the traffic stop, the police said.
Authorities say that after Nichols was arrested, he complained of being short of breath. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he died on January 10. His family said that the police beat him so badly that he could not be recognised.
In a statement released earlier this week, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office said it understood the “reasonable request from the public” to see the video of Nichols’ death.
The city of Memphis puts out videos of Tyre Nichols being arrested and beaten.
Friday night, the city of Memphis put the four-part video on Vimeo.
In the videos, police officers can be seen dragging Nichols out of his car and swearing at him as they do so. Nichols is being chased by an officer on foot when the officer tries to use a Taser on him. Nichols can say, “All I want to do is go home.” Later, as Nichols is lying on the ground, officers repeatedly kick, punch, and hit him with a baton. He can be heard shouting “Mom” at one point. Lawyers for the Nichols family say that this happened less than 100 yards from where the family lives.
Ben Crump, the family’s lawyer, compared the video to the video of the police beating of Rodney King, a Black driver in Los Angeles in 1991.
After police video was made public, there were protests in several cities.
After the videos came out, there were mostly peaceful protests in cities across the U.S. People marched and chanted against police brutality, and in some cities they shut down highways and intersections.
