Netflix is working on a documentary series about the life and murder of famous U.K. television presenter Jill Dando, who was assassinated in 1999.
Dando was shot dead outside her West London house on April 26, 1999. Her murder became one of the most high-profile and difficult investigations in British history.
Dando’s killing prompted one of the greatest investigations in Metropolitan Police history. A defendant was convicted and imprisoned for eight years before being exonerated following an appeal and retrial. Despite the fact that authorities have identified numerous additional suspects, Dando’s murder remains unsolved.
Dando began her career as a newsreader for BBC Radio Devon in 1985, after working as a trainee reporter for a small weekly newspaper. Dando arrived in London to deliver national news in 1988 after spells on provincial television.
Dando hosted the BBC news shows “Breakfast Time,” “Breakfast News,” “One O’Clock News,” “Six O’Clock News,” “Holiday,” and “Crimewatch” from 1995 until her death.
The presentation follows four years after BBC One’s The Murder of Jill Dando and ITV’s Jill Dando: The 20-Year Mystery, both of which honored the 20th anniversary of her murder and were seen by a combined total of about 6.6 million overnight people. Dando was also chosen as the BBC’s Personality of the Year in 1997.
The documentary, which will air later this year, was directed by Marcus Plowright (Fred and Rose West: Reopened) and executive produced by Emma Cooper (The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes).
