The decision to name their son Cosmo was made by Scarlett Johansson and her husband Colin Jost, according to the actress.

During a Monday appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the 37-year-old actor spoke about how she and the comedian came up with the name for her child and recalled why she loved it.

She teased host Kelly Clarkson, saying, “We just threw a lot of letters together.” “No,” you reply, “but I just truly thought it was so endearing and all of our friends appreciated it.”

The Black Widow actor made fun of the fact that not everyone liked the name Cosmo, especially since Jost’s mother had even urged the couple to alter it.

Johansson continued, “Colin’s parents had a little more trouble with it.” She kept offering different iterations for a while, but I kept saying, “No, he’s already out, it’s past that time.”

Jost initially acknowledged that his mother attempted to persuade him and his wife to get their son’s name changed during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers in October 2021.

In addition to saying that his mother was “somewhat thrown” by the name Cosmo, he said that his family had been “extremely supportive” of his son before outlining the other ideas she had.

I wonder whether she thought it was somewhat of a hippie thing, he said. But she would phone us and say, “Cosmo,” after a few days, say, three or four. “And now, is it final?” she would ask. For example, “Did you submit the birth certificate?” Explained Jost.

We then say, “Oh, sure, we did that at the hospital. She then says, “Okay. Interesting. Because there is also a name Cosimo with an I, as I was reading. Therefore, there might potentially be a choice,'” he concluded.

Scarlett Johansson Shares Why She and Husband Colin Jost Named Their Son Cosmo

The co-host of “Weekend Update” went on to say that his mother eventually agreed to the name after meeting other people who shared the name Cosmo.

Johansson revealed in other parts of her interview with Clarkson that both of her children’s names are also the names of flowers and that she shares an eight-year-old daughter named Rose with her ex-husband Romain Dauriac.

Cosmo is a really cute small flower that comes in different orange and yellow tones, which is why my daughter also enjoyed it, the woman explained.

In August 2021, Jost posted on Instagram that his son with Johansson had been born, adding that “privacy would be highly appreciated.”

The star of Marriage Story spoke with Vanity Fair earlier this year when she discussed her second pregnancy and explained why she and her husband decided to keep it a secret.

I wanted to be able to feel how I felt about my changing body without having other people tell me how they thought I looked, whether it was good or bad, she added. “I realized when carrying my son that it’s strange how much things people place on you when you’re pregnant—their hopes, their judgment, or their desire, a lot of that is put on pregnant women,” the author said.
