As of the year 2022, American professional basketball referee Tim Donaghy has amassed a net worth of $3 million. He had a 13-year career as an NBA referee from 1994 to 2007. Because of his involvement in a gambling controversy, he resigned in 2007. During his time in the NBA, Donaghy worked 772 regular season games and 20 postseason games.
The NBA gambling scandal of 2007 is probably where most people will remember Donaghy. He used his insider’s knowledge of the players, owners, coaches, and officials to win bets on professional basketball games. For his crime in 2008, the court imposed a sentence of 15 months in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release.
After being released from prison in 2009, Donaghy published Private Foul: A First-Individual Account of the Scandal That Rocked the NBA and made his refereeing debut for MLW in 2021.
The historic controversy that rocked the athletics world in the late 2000s will be revisited by an episode of the Netflix documentary series “Untold” in 2022.

Early Life
On January 7, 1967, in the Philadelphia neighborhood of Havertown, Pennsylvania, was born Timothy Francis Donaghy. Donaghy has always been a huge fan of the sport. He grew up in Philadelphia and became an instant 76ers fan thanks to the influence of his father, Gerry Donaghy, a longtime basketball official at the university and high school levels.
Donaghy spent four years playing varsity sports at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, Pennsylvania. Next, Donaghy attended and graduated from Villanova University in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts.

How Did Tim Donaghy Earn His Money?
Tim’s father was a collegiate basketball referee, and he grew up in sports-crazed Delaware County, Pennsylvania, so he always thought he’d follow in his footsteps.
He put in the time and effort necessary to earn a seat on the local high school basketball officiating crew and ultimately a Bachelor of Science in sales and marketing from Villanova University.
After polishing his abilities for about five years in this league, he spent another seven seasons in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA).
After joining the NBA in 1994, Tim officiated 772 regular season games and 20 playoff games before he was forced to quit permanently in early July 2007 due to revelations about his involvement in criminal activity. The truth is that the official was hooked on gambling even before he was hired by the prestigious organization, and he had been placing bets on the golf course or at the poker table for years.
Tim said in the Netflix documentary “Untold: Operation Flagrant Foul,” “[I] didn’t need the money,” because “between stock investments, between playoff bonuses, and my pay,” he made close to $400,000 a year. When I was offering predictions on NBA games I was officiating, I got too close to a line I wasn’t supposed to cross. He insists that he relied entirely on his insider knowledge.
The exact amount Tim won from his first bets is unknown, but after he began working with James Battista and Thomas “Tommy” Martino in 2006, he received $2,000 for each winning prediction. However, it has been suggested that his predictions were so spot-on that his share of the profits was quickly bumped up to $5,000, with no out-of-pocket costs for missed bets as per the original agreement.
Therefore, the now-disgraced NBA official estimated to the FBI that he made roughly $30,000 for supplying information to the bookies, based on his normal 70-80% success rate.
It’s worth noting that Tim spent 15 months in federal prison, paid a $500,000 fine, and had to pay back the government $30,000 in addition to paying reparations for his crimes. A judge then ordered him to pay another $233,317 in restitution (together with his two co-conspirators) to the NBA for clearly defrauding them.

Personal Life
Donaghy and his wife Kimberly had four daughters by the time he married her in 1995. Kim eventually filed for divorce in September 2007 after being married for 12 years, shortly after the scandal broke.
Tim Donaghy’s Net Worth
To all appearances, Tim Donaghy is doing very well for himself at the moment, what with his having gotten back on his feet after the whole fiasco by embracing his background.
Along with his autobiography, “Blowing the Whistle,” he has also worked at a gambling treatment clinic and operated a website called RefPicks, which is no longer active but used to sell sports picks.
After he was awarded $3 million in a 2012 lawsuit against the publisher of his book for failing to pay him, he began “investing in real estate and basically being a landlord.” As a result, we estimate that Tim’s total wealth is somewhere around $3 million.
